Chapter 740: Encounter
Just as Xu Ke was plunged into deep self-doubt, Alice’s attention had already been caught by a toy shop. She stood by the roadside staring at the dolls inside the shop window, without blinking, until the distracted Xu Ke bumped into her, snapping her back to reality.
"If you like it, let’s go in and take a look." Xu Ke looked at her eyes, filled with longing as she gazed at the dolls, and spoke.
"Can we? Won’t it delay your plans?"
"What plans do I have? I’m just out for a stroll today, it doesn’t matter where we go. If you want to take a look inside, we can go in." Xu Ke said.
Alice, who had been somewhat hesitant, finally stopped wavering upon hearing Xu Ke’s words. She grabbed Xu Ke’s hand and rushed into the shop.
Perhaps because it was a toy store, all three shop assistants were wearing plush costumes, their faces painted with exaggerated makeup, making them look as if the dolls had come to life.
"Sir, madam, is there anything I can help you with?" A lady with an exaggerated hat and heavy makeup stood before Xu Ke and Alice and asked.
"I’d like to see that doll," Alice pointed at a meticulously crafted doll displayed on the counter and said.
"Alright, please wait a moment." The female shop assistant glanced at Xu Ke and Alice, then turned to unlock the glass case and took out the exquisitely crafted SD doll.
Alice gazed lovingly at the doll, and just as she reached out to touch it, the shop assistant blocked her hand, her lips painted a shocking red forming a terrifying curve, "Sorry, miss, our dolls are not to be touched unless purchased."
Alice’s movement froze, and a blush of embarrassment spread across her face. It was the first time she encountered such a situation, and in front of someone she cared about, no less. For a moment, Alice wished a hole would open up and swallow her. She lowered her head, determined not to lift it, not daring to imagine Xu Ke’s expression; he might very well be thinking poorly of her.
As Alice was lost in wild thoughts, Xu Ke’s voice came from above her head, "We’ll take this doll. Where do we pay?"
The shop assistant’s smile grew even more exaggerated under her makeup upon hearing that Xu Ke wanted to purchase the doll, "The price of this doll is five thousand dollars, are you sure you want to buy it?" The shop assistant stared at Xu Ke intensely, making one final confirmation.
Before Xu Ke could say anything, Alice, having heard the price, immediately raised her head, "No, we don’t need it." Alice waved her hand, then turned to Xu Ke and said, "That’s too expensive, it’s equivalent to about two months’ income for an average family. I think it’s better to forget it, let’s leave."
Xu Ke pushed away the hand Alice had reached out to pull him, "If you like it, buy it. Don’t worry, I can afford it. Consider it a gift from me to you; please wrap it up, thank you." Xu Ke said a few words to Alice, then instructed the shop assistant to wrap it up.
The shop assistant, ignoring the couple’s ongoing argument, quickly moved to the side to wrap the doll as Xu Ke had requested.
Although Alice was happy about Xu Ke wanting to buy her a gift, she didn’t want to accept such an expensive one. She continued trying to persuade Xu Ke to abandon the idea, "I’m really happy about your intention to give me a gift, but this gift is really too expensive. If you truly want to give me something, a simple gift would suffice; there’s no need to spend so much."
"I don’t think it’s expensive. The price of the gift isn’t important; what’s important is that you like it, and the shop assistant already started wrapping it up. We can’t very well ask her to unwrap it now, can we?"
Xu Ke pointed to the side, and Alice followed his finger with her gaze, seeing that the SD doll had already been disassembled, its limbs packed, leaving her unable to voice further objections.
Alice looked at Xu Ke with a slightly shy smile, feeling sweet inside, pondering what kind of gift she should give Xu Ke in return.
While the two were waiting, the shop door opened again, and three elegantly dressed girls walked in, the leading one dressed particularly seductively.
The three girls, upon entering the shop, did not immediately look at the dolls and various toys, instead making a beeline for Alice. "Let’s see who it is—oh, isn’t it our little sweetheart Alice? Why aren’t you at school, and what are you doing here? Looking at dolls? My god, how old are you, still thinking you’re an unweaned kid?" The leading girl said sarcastically, a lollipop sticking out of her mouth.
"And accompanying you is an Asian guy, huh? Couldn’t find a boyfriend in Holland so you picked this kind of trash to entertain yourself?" The girl with the lollipop looked mocking, her hand aimed at Xu Ke’s midsection, but Xu Ke reacted quickly, grabbing her wrist just in time, preventing her from succeeding.
"Ha, it’s just a pat, why are you being such a miser?" The girl rolled her eyes dramatically, speaking impatiently, "You’re lucky I even touched you, understand? Look at you, just some Asian and you’re here in Holland, acting all high and mighty, ugh."
Alice’s hand by her side slowly clenched into a fist, fury filling her eyes as she looked at the girl. Her body even began to tremble slightly, "You can say whatever you want about me, but you can’t speak about him like that. You have no right. You don’t know how great he is; by saying that, you’re insulting him. I demand you apologize to him." Alice mustered her courage, glaring at the girl’s exotic face with conviction.
"Apologize to him? Talking to me like that, are you crazy? Did water flood your brain and make you an idiot?" The girl said, suddenly shoving Alice with great force. Taken by surprise, Alice began to fall backward but, fortunately, Xu Ke stood behind and caught her by the waist, preventing her from falling.
Xu Ke let go after ensuring Alice was standing steadily, looking at the girl who had pushed Alice with mild disdain mixed with contempt, "Apologize to Alice. Apologize to me. For your words and actions just now."
The girl rolled her eyes dramatically, using her pinky to clean her ear, flicking it afterward as she looked at Xu Ke with a cold sneer, "Don’t you guys understand human language?"
