Chapter 708: Encirclement
When Xu Ke and the man with glasses returned to the dormitory, it was already very late. The sky had been dyed a coral red by the glow of the sunset. The two other men who had been sitting inside looked anxiously at each other, waiting for Xu Ke, almost like waiting for their hero to return. Seeing Xu Ke’s car come back, their eyes lit up instantly, and they rushed towards him.
"Finally, you’re back. If you came any later, I might have left. Sitting here really made me uncomfortable," the man said, showing a look of relief, as if he had narrowly escaped a disaster. The other two men who came out with him looked a bit embarrassed upon hearing his words.
"Sorry, we picked up some things in town, which took some extra time. Here’s five thousand yuan, take it first. If it’s not enough, come and find me again," Xu Ke said, handing over a wad of cash to the man.
"It’s alright. I don’t need the money until tomorrow," the man casually took the money from Xu Ke and, still in front of him, licked his fingertip as he counted the money.
The man’s crude behavior left the other three speechless. Xu Ke showed no emotion, quietly standing in place, patiently waiting for the man to finish counting out his cash. Only when the man paused did Xu Ke speak, "The amount is correct, right?"
"It’s correct, thanks."
"You’re welcome. Just invite me for a drink at your wedding," Xu Ke said with a smile.
The man’s expression flickered slightly at Xu Ke’s words, and then he muttered, "Wait for the wedding banquet." He tucked the money away and quickly left.
"Crude, greedy, shameless!" Watching the man’s retreating figure, the quiet man spat out these words with a stern expression.
The man with glasses stepped forward, patted his shoulder, and said, "Don’t worry, they won’t be arrogant for long. The police will be here tonight to encircle the village tightly, ensuring no one can escape."
"I request to participate in the operation," the quiet man said, looking at him with determination.
"You’ll have to ask the commander about that when the time comes. I’m not familiar with these matters, so it’s not convenient for me to intervene."
Hearing this from the man with glasses, the quiet man nodded and turned back into the dormitory.
As night fell, outside activities halted, everyone stayed in the dormitory watching the time, quietly waiting for the promised police force to arrive.
It wasn’t until around nine in the evening that there was some commotion outside. Everyone rushed out of the dormitory to see more than thirty police officers in special forces uniforms, guns in hand, standing on the open ground.
"Hello, I’m Ke Pengcheng from the SWAT team. I heard about this case from higher-ups and came here voluntarily. I hope everyone can cooperate with my work to make sure we capture this den of criminals and prevent more citizens and families from suffering," Ke Pengcheng said with a resolute expression, wearing a dark blue police uniform.
"We’ll definitely cooperate with your work. The dozen or so people here are all special forces veterans. With us gathered together, I believe we can complete the mission perfectly," the man with glasses introduced the dozen special forces, who looked like migrant workers standing on the other side, to Ke Pengcheng.
Ke Pengcheng looked over where he pointed, his eyes slightly cold, "That’s great. With our two teams combined, we should definitely be able to capture these people." Speaking, Ke Pengcheng walked towards the veterans, saluted them, and began asking about their previous units and specialties, to flesh out his plan.
The quiet man silently moved to Ke Pengcheng’s side, calmly listening. After Ke Pengcheng finished questioning the veterans, the quiet man began to talk about his own resume, requesting to join the operation. Xu Ke, at some point, also approached and indicated his desire to participate.
Ke Pengcheng tested their abilities and, finding them competent, nodded in agreement.
When the operation involves so many target individuals, having more people is safer and more effective.
Everyone closed ranks, and Ke Pengcheng quickly deployed the plan he had formed in his mind, dividing people into several teams based on the descriptions of the surrounding geography provided by the man with glasses and others, directing the teams to assigned positions to await orders.
Ke Pengcheng opted for a cautious encircling tactic, stretching the line long enough to ensnare the whole village and setting an ambush on the only mountain road. As soon as the targets entered the trap, the only exit would be sealed off, leaving them no way out.
After the teams got into position, it was already past midnight. By the time they cleaned up traces and hid the vehicles, it was well into the wee hours. Yet none of those involved in the operation could sleep, even the two not participating but left waiting in the dormitory were tossing and turning in bed, their minds filled with worry about whether the mission would succeed.
The long wait was tormenting but everyone endured. As the sun’s rays pierced through the thick clouds and penetrated the forest, a wobbly van unaware of the awaiting trap entered the web crafted for it, like an insect barreling into a spider’s web without any defense.
"Damn it, they came quite early. Attention, all teams, the prey is in the net. Tighten the pockets and don’t let these bugs escape." Ke Pengcheng’s voice came through the radio, instantly raising the spirits of those waiting in ambush. The team guarding the road quickly set up barricades as planned and tightened the encirclement, swiftly closing in on the oblivious village.
The van drove unimpeded into the village. Despite the early hour, almost every household in the village was already up and gathered in the center, waiting. As the van came into view, everyone’s faces lit up with smiles.
The van stopped, and a woman in a bright red coat and a man in an army green jacket got out. The lean, dark village chief grinned, displaying his yellow teeth, and approached the woman with a cheerful demeanor, vastly different from his previous impatient and unfriendly attitude towards Xu Ke and others. "Sister Feng, you’ve worked hard. How many do you have for our village this time? We have quite a few bachelors recently," he said, rubbing his hands eagerly.
