Chapter 712 - 711: The Old Lady
"Forget it, Captain Ke, don’t bother arguing with an old lady like this. People like her are just shameless old rogues. If you argue with her, she’ll just waste your time with endless nonsense. There’s still the human trafficking case waiting for you, don’t waste your time on this trivial matter." The man rubbing his belly got out of the car and walked over to Ke Pengcheng, whispering to him.
"I understand what you mean, but this kind of crooked atmosphere cannot be tolerated. Everyone thinks this is a small matter; seeing her face no punishment and even profit from it, what will be the result? Everyone will imitate her. In that case, do you still think this is a small matter?" Ke Pengcheng spoke firmly, looking at the man.
"I’m reassured that you all are handling that case, but for this matter here, I must wait for the local police station to send someone to take her away and let the judicial process resolve it. I just don’t believe that the law of our country should make concessions in the face of an old rogue. So what if she’s old? Even if the Emperor breaks the law, he is punished the same as a commoner. How is she different from ordinary people? How is she different from the citizens of our country? Does she have an extra pair of wings or cry more than others? I’ve never feared a life of blood and swords; now I’m supposed to fear an old lady? It’s simply a joke."
When Ke Pengcheng spoke, his voice didn’t lower at all, his attitude extremely firm, causing the old woman, who was still sitting on the ground crying, to gradually quiet down and put on a conciliatory smile towards him.
"You don’t need to worry about things here anymore, just get in the car, I’ll handle it here. You guys go over there and back me up first."
With Ke Pengcheng’s words, the belly-rubbing man didn’t persist. Patting his belly, he said, "Alright then, we’ll head over first. Once you’re done here, come find us."
On the road, the strawberries were moved to the other side by Xu Ke and the man with glasses. After the man got in the car, Xu Ke and the man with glasses followed suit and drove away.
Their shadows, along with Ke Pengcheng’s, gradually receded into the distance until they became mere dots and finally vanished.
"I finally understand why Captain Ke has achieved many merits over the years yet hasn’t been promoted much. He’s too straightforward and inflexible." Said the belly-rubbing man, with a tinge of admiration in his tone.
"I think it’s good. Though his promotion is slow, he at least has a clear conscience and lives comfortably," said the taciturn man.
"You’re right, at least what he does doesn’t burden him. Not many people can stay true to themselves; he’s one of them, a respectable good cop." The man with glasses adjusted his glasses and spoke.
When Xu Ke and the others arrived at the police station, it was already in chaos. Awakened villagers were forming a confrontational stance against the police officers, tension palpable between the two groups. Children were crying noisily, and adults shouting curses, which made one’s head buzz like being attacked by ultrasonics.
When Xu Ke and the others reached the door, they didn’t want to go in; it was too noisy. Before they could turn back, they were spotted by sharp-eyed villagers.
In their village, buying wives had been a tradition for decades, and nothing had ever happened before. But now, as soon as these people showed up, trouble came. Clearly, they were traitors.
The villagers had been isolated from the world for a long time, rarely interacting with outsiders. But this didn’t mean they were fools. On the contrary, they were quite clever when it came to their own interests.
"Stop right there, it must be your group who reported us and brought the government people to our village to catch us. We treated you as good people and trusted you; you’re nothing but beasts. You’ll never come to a good end." The man who previously asked Xu Ke for money looked at him with eyes full of hatred.
Once the man started, more filthy words poured towards Xu Ke and the other three, the vulgarity making one’s ears feel unclean. Everyone present, apart from the arrested, were educated individuals, unaccustomed to such foul language, each frowning as if they could crush a fly.
Some even got so worked up that they used their brute strength to break through the police barricade, reaching Xu Ke. "You bastard, I’ll kill you, you piece of crap!" The man said as he swung his fan-like hand, turning it into a fist, aiming at Xu Ke’s chest with a ferocity as if he were a demon from Hell.
The reason he targeted Xu Ke was simple and straightforward: Xu Ke was the closest and seemed easy to hit. In the man’s eyes, someone looking like a "pretty boy" was nothing, able to be knocked down no matter how many came.
Xu Ke didn’t seem frightened or panicked by the man’s attack, but the other three, who had never seen Xu Ke in action, were worried when they saw the man’s aggressive demeanor compared to Xu Ke’s seemingly frail figure. Even the usually silent one loudly reminded Xu Ke to dodge.
However, Xu Ke remained still, whether because he was scared stiff or too tense to hear the warning. Just as the man’s fist was about to land, and those around held their breath in nervous anticipation, Xu Ke moved.
He simply extended his well-defined hand, making no extra movements, yet the man’s fist stopped.
The man didn’t expect the "pretty boy" to catch his punch so easily, leaving him momentarily stunned. But after the surprise came a wave of shame.
With a loud shout, the man raised his other hand, intending to attack Xu Ke again.
"Tsk." Xu Ke clicked his tongue lightly, ignoring the man’s other hand, and directly twisted the original one he held. Instantly, it bent at an awkward angle, causing the man to clutch his now-misshapen arm with a loud cry of pain, which, even in the chaotic environment, stood out, overriding all other sounds.
Seeing this sequence of reversals, the three who had been tense relaxed a bit, with the man with glasses looking at Xu Ke with a hint of admiration, feeling as if he had stumbled upon a treasure.
On the other side, watching their companion being hit and hearing his wails, the villagers erupted once more.
Just as the police were nearly overwhelmed by these people, Ke Pengcheng, having resolved the old lady’s situation, returned from outside. Seeing the police station in such disarray, Ke Pengcheng thought he had come to the wrong place, but after confirming their uniforms, he knew he hadn’t.
