Chapter 733: A Different Kind of Female Shop Owner
"You’re ruthless, you’re really ruthless. If I die, I’ll curse you from Hell. I’ll curse you to never find happiness in this life, curse you and your daughter to be unlucky for the rest of your lives, living in the shadows of others, never able to lift your heads."
Seeing hope shatter, the man bared his fangs, no longer pretending to be a rabbit. He used the most venomous language to curse the woman in front of him and the child in her arms.
But the louder he cursed, the happier the store owner smiled, because she knew he was scared, that he was feeling guilty.
"I never expected, that you would also have such a day. This is God’s blessing. My daughter and I will live well, we’ll have a happy life, and you can repent in Hell, redeem your sins, and pay off your debts there." The store owner revealed a smile, which could be described as gentle.
Though it was clearly a beautiful scene, the man only felt a chill down his spine.
While the man was still engulfed in fear, Xu Ke had already arrived behind him, raising the knife in his hand.
As the knife fell, blood splattered onto Xu Ke’s face, clothes, the shelves, and the ground covered in scattered flower petals.
The man clutched the wound on his neck, incredulously turning his head, only to see Xu Ke’s distinctly Eastern face.
The store owner watched the man’s body fall, her expression void of emotion, yet her hand never left covering her daughter’s eyes.
"Today, you probably won’t be able to continue the business. Hang a sign outside," Xu Ke said calmly and indifferently as he looked at the man on the ground whose body was convulsing.
"Okay." The store owner swiftly moved to the back of the flower shop while holding her young daughter in her arms.
Behind the flower shop was a house where the store owner usually lived with her daughter. They’d work the business during the day and return to rest at night, so they didn’t need to walk at night and could rest a bit longer during the day.
This kind of architecture was rare in Holland, but now it was convenient for Xu Ke.
Xu Ke waited only for a short while outside before the store owner had settled her daughter.
She walked out from the back, calm and quick as she hung up the closed sign outside, pulled down the shutter, and turned on the lights inside the room.
"What now? What do we do?" The store owner asked, looking at the man who was now completely motionless on the floor, her voice steady.
"Find a place to dispose of the body, then clean up the bloodstains outside. That’s it, very simple," Xu Ke said lightly, watching the store owner’s calm demeanor.
Originally, he thought he’d have to handle the aftermath alone, but he was surprised by the store owner’s calmness; she could handle a lot, which made things easier for him. If they moved quickly, they could catch dinner.
"How do you plan to dispose of the body?"
"Leave it to me, or, do you want to watch?" Xu Ke asked the store owner.
The store owner was silent for a moment, and just when Xu Ke thought she wouldn’t answer, she spoke, "Can I watch?"
"Of course." Xu Ke nodded.
"Aren’t you afraid of me being like this? Don’t you feel uncomfortable, thinking that you’ve come to know a fearsome demon?" For the first time, the store owner looked somewhat flustered.
"Why would you think that?" Xu Ke glanced at the corpse on the floor and continued, "If you think doing this is considered scary, or demonic, then what does that make me, who proposed the idea and personally took action? Satan?"
"Don’t overthink it, this is merely a choice. In this world, fairness and justice often come late, and the wicked often roam free for long. But when the victim can’t stand it or bear it any longer, that’s when we make a choice. It’s either enduring and waiting for justice and fairness to arrive or picking up the knife in our hands to claim justice for ourselves. So you don’t need to be afraid, all of this was inevitably brought upon himself, no one else is to blame."
Hearing Xu Ke’s words, the store owner’s tense body relaxed. She let out a long sigh, and her expression became much more animated.
"Hearing you say that makes me feel much better. I was afraid I’d become a monster or a demon in your eyes, questioning whether what I did was right. Thank you for letting me stop doubting myself, for helping me rid of this man, so I can have a new life with my daughter. You are practically an angel sent by God to save me, I am truly grateful to you." Tears of gratitude shimmered in the store owner’s eyes as she looked at Xu Ke, almost seeming like they would turn to water and flow out.
"This is merely a small matter." Xu Ke interrupted her before she could continue to express her feelings.
Stuff like being called an angel or referred to God, it was fine the first time, but hearing it too often makes one’s scalp tingle with discomfort.
Xu Ke wasn’t against other people’s religious beliefs; he just didn’t believe it himself, thinking these are self-deceiving lies, comforting lies to fool oneself.
The store owner, not upset with the interruption, followed Xu Ke’s instructions, and helped him move the body into the room’s bathroom.
"Why are we moving him here?" The store owner was somewhat puzzled.
"First, drain his blood, then deal with the rest," Xu Ke said as he used the knife to cut deep into the man’s carotid artery. The originally slowly flowing blood suddenly gushed out, like a fountain, quickly dyeing the small area red, with the air thick with the smell of blood.
Xu Ke seemed not to notice the smell, his expression calm as he watched the small whirlpools in the sewer as blood streamed in.
"What’s next? What else do we need to do?" The store owner asked after watching with Xu Ke for a while. Unable to see any meaning in it and feeling uncomfortable with the bathroom’s smell, she planned to find other things to do.
"Take up those flowers, wash off the bloodstains, and find a place to burn them," Xu Ke replied.
"Why burn them? Can’t we just throw them away? Burning means finding a deserted place, which is quite a hassle," the store owner promptly voiced her question, like a curious child eager for knowledge.
"Doing that isn’t safe. You can’t ensure every flower stem is cleaned properly, if thrown out, it might bring trouble if someone picks them up."
"But if we’re going to burn them anyway, why wash them?"
"Double insurance, an extra layer of security is always good," Xu Ke answered.
