Chapter 719: The Bet Follow-Up
Claude’s actions upon arrival and departure carried an elusive air. He was the first person Xu Ke encountered at the Calvin Family who he couldn’t understand. Xu Ke didn’t know why this man stopped him, nor what these ambiguous words meant. But isn’t the mystery what makes it more exciting?
A strange smile appeared on Xu Ke’s face.
When Xu Ke returned to the racecourse not long after, all the trials had already ended. Everyone was waiting on the field for the news of whether they’d secured the job, even the man who had been kicked unconscious had returned. However, he kept his distance from Xu Ke, as he wasn’t keen on fulfilling his bet.
"Thank you all for trusting the Calvin Family today and participating in our job interview. After a morning of competition, we’ve finalized our candidates, their names are on this card in my hand. For those who didn’t make it, don’t be discouraged. It’s not that you’re not good; you’re just not the right fit for the Calvin Family. Even without the Calvin’s job card, I believe your future is bright and smooth," said the butler.
The butler’s words comforted those who had already decided they would not get the job. It’s undeniable that the butler was quite the speaker; some people’s spirits no longer appeared so dismal.
"Once I announce the names on this list, I hope none of you will leave. You came early to participate, and the process has been exhausting, but it’s almost lunch time. I hope you can stay for a meal before leaving to embrace a better future," the butler said with a smile that seemed to glow in the sunlight.
Hearing that there was a free lunch, the hungry candidates cheered, shedding their last bit of tension. They cheered Calvin’s name, while Xu Ke stood on the outskirts of the crowd, feeling the joy of the participants, mentally sticking another label on the Calvin Family.
Should we say that the Calvin Family is worthy of its decades of prosperity? From the moment you step into Caven, no matter your status, you’re treated with the utmost respect. It seems simple, but it’s actually quite difficult to achieve.
Thinking of this, Xu Ke automatically ignored Marian, who had called him up without saying anything before sending him back, and also the inexplicable Claude.
Although Xu Ke was distracted, he heard what needed to be heard. When he heard his name among the four people selected, he wasn’t overly excited, but instead met many envious and jealous glances. Among the four equestrian instructors, there were in total four men, including Xu Ke, and one stunningly beautiful woman.
After the announcement, the butler led the group to eat. Due to the large number of people, the butler didn’t take them inside but arranged for lunch in an outdoor area close to the garden.
The man who had previously provoked Xu Ke kept his eyes on him stealthily while walking, caught between the desire for a free meal and not wanting to fulfill his bet. However, seeing that Xu Ke never looked his way, he slowly relaxed, thinking Xu Ke had forgotten.
But did Xu Ke really forget? How could that be? He’s not senile. Even if he had forgotten at first, the man’s sneaky glances would remind him of everything. Xu Ke didn’t mention it because he considered the matter too minor to pursue further.
During the meal, the man cautiously stayed away from Xu Ke, but seeing that Xu Ke wasn’t paying attention to him, he became bolder after a few strong drinks, leading to a quarrel with someone nearby.
Soon, the two fought, but were quickly stopped by others around them, preventing a major incident. However, the cheerful atmosphere of the meal turned tense.
"You act all tough, fighting me, what makes you think you can? Are you even a man? You’re worse than a woman. At least a woman can admit it when she loses a bet. But you? Did you seriously fulfill your wager? You’re a coward, an escapist, not worthy of sharing this dining table with us. You’re just trash," shouted the burly man with a broken lip from the fight.
The burly man’s words brought everyone’s memory back to the start of the interview, shifting their focus to Xu Ke and the man. Originally arrogant, the man’s bravado started to fade, his face paling as he bit his lip and avoided Xu Ke’s gaze, as if ignoring it would make the issue disappear.
"Why are you silent now? Weren’t you talking tough a moment ago about taking off my head? Why aren’t you speaking now? Is it because I hit a nerve, and you have no face to speak? Cowards like you don’t have the right to contest me. You belong in the sewers, only fit to squeak in the dark corners, not participate here, under the sun," the burly man continued as he broke free from those holding him, tidying his disheveled clothes, looking at the man smugly.
"Don’t glare at me like that. What can you do? What did I say that wasn’t true? What fact wasn’t real? You always talk big but shrink away when it’s time to act. I’ve seen your type too many times. You never improve." The disdainful look in his eyes pierced the man deeply, but he had no ground to retort, as it was all true.
Seeing the man unable to rebut him, the burly man grew more smug, speaking without restraint, airing all the man’s carefully hidden shameful past for all to see.
The people around were engrossed in the story, their grip on the man loosening.
The man easily shrugged them off, his eyes red with anger as he walked towards Xu Ke. Xu Ke was eating a small mango cake when the shadow of someone blocked the sunlight over his head.
"I’m here to honor my bet," a low voice came from above Xu Ke’s head.
Xu Ke had thought the man was going to reneg on the bet but was surprised when the man, right in front of him, knelt down and started wiping Xu Ke’s shoe with his sleeve. The sudden action left Xu Ke momentarily stunned, unsure of how to react.
