Chapter 713 - 712: Epilogue
Looking at the chaotic police station, Ke Pengcheng didn’t hesitate at all. He immediately pulled out the gun from his waist and fired it to make his point.
The loud gunshot instantly quieted the crowd.
"Everyone cooperate with the police, and if anyone acts up, my gun doesn’t have eyes!" Ke Pengcheng said this with a bandit-like air, and combined with his fierce appearance, he truly looked like someone who would say what they mean and do what they say. The villagers, who previously were uncooperative, suddenly quieted down like quails and genuinely started cooperating with the police.
The former station captain adjusted his clothes and hat, then quietly said to Ke Pengcheng, "Firing a gun in the police station is against the rules."
"Right now, I’m the rules here," Ke Pengcheng arrogantly said, using the gun barrel to nudge the hat on his own head.
The captain wanted to persuade him further, but Ke Pengcheng’s retort stopped him short, his face turning red with frustration.
"You’ve brought back so many villagers this time."
The captain was about to continue when Ke Pengcheng naturally cut him off, "Against the rules? None of them are innocent." When Ke Pengcheng mentioned these villagers, there was disgust in his dark pupils.
"But there are young children among them; what could they possibly do? Bringing these kids to the police station, it’s such a big impact," the captain, finding a point to argue after hearing Ke Pengcheng’s words, quickly said.
"I’ve already arrested the adults from their families. Where am I supposed to take them if not here? Leave them in the mountains? I’m afraid they wouldn’t survive a day on their own," Ke Pengcheng said, looking at the few children being comforted by the limited number of female officers in the station.
The captain, evidently not expecting such a reason, instinctively shifted his gaze to the group of men present, then belatedly realized something, "Wait a minute, all the arrested are men; there should be mothers at home, right?"
"Either the mothers are in the hospital for treatment or they’re already dead. Why do you think I arrested them? Some people look like humans but behave like beasts. Did you prepare the rooms I asked for? There are many people to interrogate, time is tight, and the task is urgent. If you’re not ready, please get things prepared quickly."
Seeing Ke Pengcheng’s impatient demeanor, the captain, although dissatisfied, was still bound by orders from above and quickly arranged for interrogations in separate rooms. The captain wanted to assign people to assist Ke Pengcheng, but Ke Pengcheng refused, insisting those brought by him would handle the questioning.
The man with glasses, along with two other men, stayed outside to hold the line, watching those yet to be interrogated, while Xu Ke, having nothing to do, returned to the hotel alone. After a brief tidy-up, he fell asleep. When he woke, a private doctor was already by his side, removing his stitches.
"Your wounds are healing well. Avoid spicy and pungent foods for about a week, and you should be fine," the private doctor said with a kind smile.
"Okay, I understand. How are things at home since I’m not there?" Xu Ke said, getting dressed and getting out of bed.
"Everything is fine, and Ms. Yu Xia is also recovering well," the private doctor replied respectfully.
"I probably can’t return to Shangjing immediately, so I’ll have to trouble you to take care of things there for me. As for my injuries, please keep it to yourself; I don’t want my family to worry."
"Don’t worry, I will keep your condition confidential," the private doctor assured him.
"Thank you for making the trip," Xu Ke said, patting the private doctor on the shoulder.
"It’s no trouble to work for you," the private doctor responded with a smile.
Although he is the Xu family’s private doctor, it doesn’t mean he has nothing else to do besides this job. Medicine also requires keeping up with the times and working with more patients. So after a brief conversation with Xu Ke, the private doctor took a private plane arranged by Xu Ke back to Shangjing.
Xu Ke stayed in the small town for a few days, learning from the man with glasses that all men in the mountain village, except the underage children, had been convicted. The children were sent to a nearby welfare institution to wait for adoption. As for Fengjie and Gangzi, who were captured, they weren’t tough; hearing they could reduce their sentences by exposing others, they confessed everything about their operations.
Ke Pengcheng got permission from his superior and went to follow up on the lead, leaving so hurriedly that he didn’t get a chance to say goodbye to Xu Ke.
As for the rescued women, they were all receiving psychological and physical treatment. Many were pregnant but chose to abort without hesitation, even if it meant paying a high personal cost. Others who couldn’t bring themselves to do it were eventually persuaded by their hastily arriving parents to terminate their pregnancies, so they could recover and welcome a new life.
The man with glasses, upon reaching this point, took off his glasses and carefully wiped them with a lens cloth he took from his pocket, all the while expressing his hopes, "Hopefully, the wounds on their bodies and in their hearts can be healed by time and family, allowing them to forget the past and embrace a new life."
"By the way, the thing I mentioned to you last time, I’ve reported it. You should receive news in the next couple of days, so be sure to check your messages and don’t miss it," the man with glasses reminded Xu Ke. He had come today mainly to say this. Seeing that Xu Ke remembered, he left, with plenty of work waiting for him as well. Coming in person showed his regard for Xu Ke, and Xu Ke appreciated this gesture.
The special department contacted Xu Ke very quickly, shortly after the man with glasses left. Xu Ke received an email from the special department. The email was unique; it contained only a mission location, a target, and a mission brief, nothing more, concise to an extreme.
The entire email didn’t mention a desire to meet Xu Ke, but this aloof attitude piqued his interest in the department.
Not delaying long, Xu Ke soon headed to the mission location in Holland. The target was a renowned local entrepreneur and an avid collector. His task was to retrieve a rare blue gemstone, the Ocean Star, a 330-carat natural blue sapphire the target had acquired at an auction in the United Kingdom a decade ago.
Apart from his extensive collection, the entrepreneur was also known locally for his romantic escapades and a considerable number of illegitimate children.
