Lu Shuangchen asked Yu Wanqiu for her opinion on where she wanted to go for their honeymoon.
At this time, the concept of a honeymoon wasnât yet common in Chinaâit was something borrowed from abroadâso Yu Wanqiu wasnât very familiar with it either. She had originally planned to travel domestically since she was about to start filming for a new project soon.
Yu Wanqiu currently filmed two movies a year, leaving her only about one or two months of rest. Most of her time was spent on set, but it had been agreed beforehand that Lu Shuangchen wouldnât interfere with her work.
After marriage, Yu Wanqiu would be more mindful of boundaries while acting. After all, she wasnât single anymore, and she didnât need to rely on scandals for attention. Work was work, and she wouldnât let her thoughts wanderâespecially since none of her co-stars were as handsome as Lu Shuangchen anyway.
Lu Shuangchen had promised not to make their relationship public, so traveling abroad might be a good ideaâno one would recognize her there.
Yu Wanqiu had never been overseas before. "You decide where we go. Iâve never left the country, so I donât even know how different it is from home."
Lu Shuangchen thought for a moment. "Other countries are more developed right now, but I firmly believe that in just a decade or two, China will progress by leaps and bounds."
What the nation lacked was time. Now, with so many students returning from studying abroad, they were all ready to contribute to their homelandâs growth.
Since Yu Wanqiu wasnât sure where to go, they decided to visit multiple placesâfirst Milan, then Paris.
Yu Wanqiu nodded in agreement. She had been so busy with filming that sheâd never really had the chance to travel. She was looking forward to their honeymoon with great anticipation.
By June, the streets were sweltering with summer heat as Yu Wanqiu boarded a flight to Italy with Lu Shuangchen.
Unlike the traditional courtyard houses and low-rise buildings back home, Milan was brimming with exotic charm.
Stepping out of the airport, they were greeted by grand cathedrals, intricate reliefs, street sculptures, and souvenir shopsâeach one captivating in its own way.
This was Yu Wanqiuâs first time abroad, and she didnât want to come across as unsophisticated. She only spoke English and was clueless about other languages, so she had to rely entirely on Lu Shuangchen.
"Honey, where are we going?"
Lu Shuangchen wiped the sweat from his forehead. It was his first time in Milan too. Logically, they should head to the hotel, but while he knew the address, he had no idea how to get thereâwhat transportation to take, which route to follow.
Despite having lived abroad for years, heâd never actually traveled for leisure. Tourism was completely unfamiliar to him.
Where to goâ¦
His throat felt dry. "Letâs go to the hotel first, drop off our things, and then figure out where to visit. Wait here for meâIâll go ask for directions."
Lu Shuangchen led Yu Wanqiu to the roadside and told her to stay put. "Iâll be back soon."
He approached a passerby, speaking fluent Italian. "My wife and I just got married and are here for a month-long trip. Could you tell us how to get to the Maple Leaf Hotel? Thatâs where weâre staying."
Once he got the directions, he jogged back. "Wanqiu, we need to take Tram 132 to get to the hotel. The stop is over there. Let me buy some water firstâthe sun is brutal."
Lu Shuangchen didnât mind the heat, but Yu Wanqiu did.
He bought water and then held an umbrella over her, realizing belatedly that he shouldnât have left her standing under the scorching sun.
Yu Wanqiu had been a little annoyed, but seeing how hard Lu Shuangchen was trying, she couldnât stay mad. She reminded herself that this was his first relationshipâheâd never even been on a date before, so of course there were things he didnât know.
They waited ten minutes for the tram before Yu Wanqiu grew impatient. "How far is it? Letâs just walk."
Lu Shuangchen considered renting a car, but in an unfamiliar place, he had no idea where to even start.
He didnât know if the distance was manageable either. "â¦It might be far, or it might not be."
Yu Wanqiu shrugged. "Then letâs walk. We can enjoy the scenery along the way."
Lu Shuangchen hesitated. "Are you sure? Iâll be fine, but Iâm worried about youâ¦"
Yu Wanqiu smirked. "Me? Donât worryâI wonât complain unless you do. Honestly, my staminaâs probably better than yours. I film action and war scenes all the time. Meanwhile, youâre an academicâsitting around all day. I should be asking if youâll be okay."
Lu Shuangchen chuckled wryly. "I promise Iâll be fine. If you get tired, Iâll carry you."
Internally, he thought, Doesnât she already know how capable I am? Weâre marriedâitâs not like we just met.
The walk from the airport to the Maple Leaf Hotel took over an hour.
Lu Shuangchen pulled both their suitcases with one hand while holding an umbrella over Yu Wanqiu with the other. She was wearing high heels, which made walking even more exhausting, so she had no intention of holding the umbrella herself.
With both hands occupied, Lu Shuangchen didnât complain. He walked beside Yu Wanqiu, sharing tidbits about Milanâs culture that heâd read online.
The broad, shaded boulevard was lined with plane trees. Yu Wanqiu stayed on the inner side of the sidewalk while Lu Shuangchen walked on the outside.
The breeze made the tree-lined path pleasantly cool.
Yu Wanqiu asked, "Do you want me to carry something for a while?"
Lu Shuangchen shook his head. "I can handle this much."
Yu Wanqiu teased, "Then donât you realize that with both hands full, you canât hold mine?"
She glanced up at the dense canopy. "Thereâs enough shade hereâwe donât need the umbrella. Give it to me."
Lu Shuangchen was flustered by her forwardness but didnât know how to respond.
His throat was parched. He smiled awkwardly, closing the umbrella, but hesitated before handing it over.
Yu Wanqiu rolled her eyes at his hesitation and simply took it from him.
Lu Shuangchenâs hand was large and firm. Holding it made the walk feel shorter and less tedious.
Who wouldâve thought their overseas honeymoon would involve strolling down foreign streets? "Lu Shuangchenâ¦"
He stiffened. Why was she using his full name? She usually called him honey.
"Whatâs wrong?"
Yu Wanqiu had a few questions. "Youâve really never been in a relationship before? Why didnât you find a girlfriend abroad? Werenât there any female classmates you got along with? Didnât anyone try to set you up?"
Objectively speaking, Lu Shuangchen was quite a catchâgood family background, handsome, and⦠capable.
Aside from being a bit reserved and older, he had no real flaws.
He must have been very attractive in his youth.
Lu Shuangchen took a moment to process her meaning.
"I wasnât close to any of my female classmates. A few people tried to introduce me to someone, but I turned them down. I already had an arranged marriage waiting for me." He also hadnât noticed anyone showing interest in him. People said the West was open-minded, but most of the international students were too focused on academics to bother with romance.
Neither Yu Wanqiu nor Lu Shuangchen knew that at school, heâd earned the nickname "The Untouchable Flower."
His credentials were impeccable, but that very perfection made him unapproachable. Combined with his claim of being betrothed back home, no one dared to pursue him.
They were all top studentsâbrilliant in their own right. Why chase someone who was clearly out of reach?
Lu Shuangchen said, "Isn't it a bit late to ask these questions now? We're already married." Yu Wanqiu let out a light hum. "Marriage can still end in divorce."
Lu Shuangchen pressed his lips together. He knew Yu Wanqiu wasnât wrongâmarriage could indeed lead to divorce. But how could she bring up divorce now? They had just gotten married. Why couldnât they stay committed from the start? Why think about an exit strategy?
Or had she already considered the possibility of divorce when she married him? If so, why marry him at all?
Lu Shuangchen stayed silent, his grip on Yu Wanqiuâs hand gradually loosening.
By the time Yu Wanqiu noticed they were no longer holding hands, they had already walked quite a distance.
Confused, she asked, "Whatâs wrong with you?"
Lu Shuangchen took a deep breath. "Why bring up divorce? Weâre married nowâletâs make it last a lifetime. Donât throw the word âdivorceâ around so casually. If thereâs something about me that bothers you, just tell me. Talking about divorce like this is pointless."
Yu Wanqiu wanted to explain that she was just jokingâthat she wasnât suggesting they would divorce, only that many couples do. It was just an exampleâwhy couldnât he understand?
What a generation gap.
Lu Shuangchen was genuinely upset, but he didnât want to argue with Yu Wanqiu. Since their marriage, they had never fought before.
Yu Wanqiu had always thought Lu Shuangchen had a good temper. She, on the other hand, was more temperamental. At home, whether it was meals or activities, Lu Shuangchen always accommodated her.
Some might call him easygoing, others might say he lacked passion. Yu Wanqiu had assumed their marriage was just like thatâarranged by their elders, a matter of timing rather than love.
But now, it seemed there was some affection between them after all.
Yu Wanqiu said, "I was talking about other people, not us. But hey, do you really want to spend your whole life with me? What if something happens to meâ"
Lu Shuangchen adopted the stern tone he used with his employees. "Iâm being serious here. Donât go off on tangents."
Yu âââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââWanqiu wasnât intimidated. "Why are you so stubborn? Iâm just asking if youâre really set on spending your life with me. Why are you dodging the question?"
Lu Shuangchen grew more frustrated, but there was nothing he could do. Yu Wanqiu, relentless, wouldnât let it go until she got an answer.
He was thirty years oldâsaying such things out loud made him cringe.
Or was it that young women these days just loved hearing sweet nothings?
"Letâs just keep walking," Lu Shuangchen said.
But Yu Wanqiu wanted to hear it. She wanted to see Lu Shuangchen utterly smitten by her.
"If you wonât even say that much, I donât want to stay here anymore. I want to go back to China. I want to go home."
Lu Shuangchen had no choice. "Youâ"
Yu Wanqiu grinned at him. "What about me?"
Lu Shuangchen exhaled. "I do want to spend my life with you. Iâm older, so Iâll probably go before you, but Iâll do my best to live a long time. Once weâre married, weâre partners for life. Donât think about divorceâI wonât allow it."
He took Yu Wanqiuâs hand again and continued walking. The road ahead stretched straight, the intersection in the distance just a tiny dot.
Yu Wanqiu asked, "You want to spend your life with me because you like me, right?"
Lu Shuangchen gave a quiet "Mm."
Yes, because he liked herâhad liked her from the first glance.
Yu Wanqiu smiled. "Then I guess weâre a pretty good match."
They walked for over an hour. By the time they reached the hotel, Yu Wanqiu was too tired to do anything else. Her feet ached from the high heels.
Lu Shuangchen said, "Iâll go buy dinner and bring it back. If you donât feel like going out, donât."
Outside the window, the sunset painted the sky in molten gold. When Lu Shuangchen returned, Yu Wanqiu beckoned him over with a finger. "Iâm not hungry anymore. Come here."
Lu Shuangchen set the food down and approached. "Are you thirsty? Should I get you water?"
Yu Wanqiu wanted him to feed her, and Lu Shuangchen obliged. But as she drank, half the bottle spilled, soaking her clothes.
What followed was beyond control. And so, in Milan, the view Yu Wanqiu saw most often was through that floor-to-ceiling window.
