The First Squad barracks buzzed with excitement. A group of fresh recruits crowded around Chen Xiwa, eyes wide with surprise.
âWow, Xiwa! Youâre heading to the Recon Unit?!â
âMan, I didnât see that coming!â
Chen Xiwa scratched his head, grinning awkwardly. âTo be honest⦠I didnât either.â
While envy was natural, no one in the squad resented him. Chen Xiwa had always been a simple, kind-hearted guy. If anyone deserved it, it was him. But amidst the chatter and laughter, one person sat in silence.
Zhuang Yan.
He perched on the edge of his bed, staring at the ground. A deep frown creased his face as he watched the others celebrate. Chen Xiwa noticed immediately.
âZhuang?â
He broke free from the group and rushed over.
âWhatâs wrong?â
Zhuang Yan sighed and forced a bitter smile.
He tossed his cap and uniform onto Chen Xiwaâs bed.
âHere. Theyâre yours now.â
Chen Xiwa blinked. âWhat? Why?â
Zhuang Yan let out a hollow chuckle.
âBecause Iâm not going anywhere. No unit, no orders. Looks like Iâm getting kicked out.â
The room fell silent.
âThatâs not true!â
Chen Xiwaâs voice rose with urgency.
âZhuang, think about it! Youâre the second university recruit in our whole regiment. Youâre a role model! The army wouldnât justââ
âBullshit.â
Zhuang Yan cut him off.
âIf they didnât want me, they shouldâve just said so! Iâm not begging to stay.â
His voice was harsh, but beneath it was hurt.
âATTENTION, ZHUANG YAN!â
A voice thundered through the barracks. Zhuang Yanâs muscles tensed. Out of pure instinct, he snapped to attention.
Lin Yi stood at the entrance, clad in his crisp green uniform.
On his shouldersâan Upper Sergeantâs insignia.
His eyes were cold, sharp.
âZhuang Yan.
Recite Article 66 of the Internal Service Regulations.â
Zhuang Yanâs mouth opened and closed.
Then, with a deep breath, he obeyed.
âArticle 66: It is strictly prohibited to sell, rent, or lend military uniforms and equipment. Minor violations will result in a warning or severe warning. More serious offenses warrant demerits or demotions. Severe violations will result in removal from rank or discharge.â
His voice rang through the barracks.
Lin Yi nodded.
âYou know the rules.â
âSo why the hell were you about to break them?â
Zhuang Yan opened his mouthâthen shut it.
â100 push-ups. Now.â
Zhuang Yan didnât argue.
He dropped to the floor and started pushing.
As he moved, Lin Yiâs voice filled the room.
âListen up, Zhuang Yan.
The military doesnât just âkick people outâ for no reason.
You think you can just âquitâ and go back to school? Think again.
You hit a superior officer. Thatâs a serious offense. If they had wanted to, they couldâve sent you to a military tribunal.
Your university would reject you. Your future jobs? Blacklisted.
Youâd be screwed, and not because they hate youâbecause YOU made that choice.â
Zhuang Yan froze mid-push-up.
âAnd that girl you keep thinking about?â
âYou really think sheâd stay with a coward who ran away because he couldnât handle discipline?â
The entire room went dead silent.
Zhuang Yanâs arms trembled. He pushed through the last rep and jumped to his feet. His breathing was heavy. His mind was in chaos.
But one thing was clearâ
Lin Yi was right.
Suddenlyâ
Footsteps.
A new voice cut through the air.
âTook me long enough to come get you, huh?â
Everyone turned their heads. It was Captain Miao.
â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦
Captain Miao smirked. âYouâve been to the Recon Unit often enough. Thought Iâd come pick you up myself.â
Lin Yi grinned. âGotta enjoy the perks of being a rookie, right?â
The First Squad stared in shock.
Captain Miao was personally here for Zhuang Yan.
Miao turned to Zhuang Yan.
âWhereâs your uniform?â
Chen Xiwa rushed to grab it.
âHere, sir!â
Miao tossed the uniform at Zhuang Yan.
âPut it on.â
Zhuang Yan hesitated. ââ¦But no unit wanted me.â
Miao raised an eyebrow. âSays who?â
Zhuang Yan blinked. Miao grinned.
âYouâre coming with me. Welcome to the Recon Unit.â
The entire squad fell silent. It made no sense that Zhuang Yan⦠got into the Recon Unit after punching a sergeant. Even Zhuang Yan himself was too stunned to react.
Chen Xiwa laughed and shoved him forward.
âGo on! What are you waiting for?!â
Zhuang Yanâs hands shook slightly as he grabbed the uniform.
The gold stripe on his shoulder⦠felt different now.
A deep breath. He threw on his uniform, shouldered his pack, and followed Miao out the door.
As they walked, Miao glanced at Lin Yi.
âYou were right about him.â
Lin Yi smirked. âTold you he had potential.â
Zhuang Yanâs journey wasnât over. It was just beginning.
