The sound of polished leather boots echoed from the far end of the corridor, growing louder as it approached Squad Oneâs barracks.
âOn your feet!â
A sharp-eyed recruit spotted Zheng Sanpao approaching in full dress uniform and shouted the command.
âWhoosh!â
In perfect synchrony, the recruits snapped upright. Even Zhuang Yan, usually defiant, jumped out of bed at the sight of the cold-faced Demon Sergeant.
But Zheng Sanpaoâs gaze first landed on Lin Yi. His expression softened slightly, eyes filled with subtle admiration. From outside the barracks window, he had overheard Lin Yiâs earlier words and those words had struck a deep chord. He had once been one of themâjust another uncertain recruit finding his way. Back then, his squad had no one like Lin Yiâno one to clear the fog of doubt and solidify their resolve. Today, Squad One was lucky. Because they had Lin Yi as their example.
â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦.
However, as Zheng Sanpaoâs gaze swept across the room, it landed on the messy, unmade bed. Instantly, his expression darkened.
âWhat is this?â
His voice was coldâdevoid of any trace of warmth.
âSergeant!â
Zhuang Yan spoke up, his voice not as confident as usual.
âItâs mine. I was lying there.â
âYou were lying there?â
Zheng Sanpaoâs brows furrowed.
âAnd who gave you permission?â
âDo you not know the military regulations?â
âA bed is meant for sleeping, isnât it?â
Zhuang Yan muttered, resentment creeping into his voice.
âDid I say you could sleep now?â
Zheng Sanpaoâs tone sharpened.
âI was tired. I just wanted to rest for a bit.â
âYou were tired?
âAnd what about them? Do you think theyâre not tired?â
Zheng Sanpaoâs sharp gaze swept across the rest of the squad.
âAll of youâassemble at the barracks entrance. Another five-kilometre run.â
âSergeant, weâre about to eatâ¦â
Chen Xiwaâs face filled with despair as he whispered.
âOnly you think about food.â
Zheng Sanpaoâs expression remained ice-cold.
âToday, youâll learn something.â
âMeals in the army are earned, not given.â
âAssemble. Now!â
Without a single glance at Zhuang Yan, Lin Yi strode out of the barracks. The other recruits followed suit, marching in formation behind him. For the first time, their movements showed discipline. A sense of collective obedience.
â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦.
Outside the barracks, the recruits stood lined up in the bitter cold, shivering with exhaustion and hunger. Zheng Sanpao approached Chen Xiwa.
âPrivate Chen Xiwa.â
âHere!â
Chen Xiwaâs back straightened, his voice loud and clear.
âWhat is the military?â
Zheng Sanpaoâs question caught him off guard.
Chen Xiwa hesitated, then shook his head, clueless.
âYou, over there.â
Zheng Sanpao pointed at another recruit.
âHere!â
âWhat is the military?â
âSergeant, I⦠I donât know.â
Finally, Zheng Sanpaoâs gaze landed on Lin Yi.
âLin Yi.â
âHere!â
Lin Yi stepped forward, his voice unwavering.
âThe military is a disciplined force, forged from steel.â
âWell said.â
Zheng Sanpaoâs gaze swept across the recruits.
âLook at you all. Do you think you could defeat an invading force?â
âAll you do is eat.â
âSome of you even dare to grumble.â
âSince youâre not tired yetâfive kilometres, cross-country. Move out!â
âSergeant!â
Zhuang Yan shouted.
Zheng Sanpao sighed, clearly irritated.
âStep forward.â
Zhuang Yan marched out of formation, his voice firm.
âThis was my mistake.â
âI will take the punishment alone.â
Zheng Sanpaoâs eyes narrowed.
âIâve said this before.â
âOne person makes a mistakeâeveryone pays the price.â
âThen let me take their punishment.â
Zhuang Yan stood tall.
âThere are nine of us. Five kilometres each. Thatâs forty-five kilometres total.
âI will run all of it.â
Zheng Sanpaoâs jaw tightened.
His finger jabbed against Zhuang Yanâs chest.
âIs this your idea of heroism?â
âThis is not about you alone.â
âThis is a unit.â
âA collective.â
âSergeant, please.â
Zhuang Yanâs voice didnât waver.
âLet me bear it. I donât want to burden my brothers.â
âSergeant!â
Lin Yiâs voice rang out from the ranks.
âMay we begin our run?â
Zheng Sanpao smirked slightly.
âGo.â
âYes, Sergeant!â
Without a second thought, Lin Yi led the charge, jogging onto the track. One by one, the recruits followed, leaving Zhuang Yan standing alone. In the fading daylight, their figures stretched long against the track.
âDo you understand why theyâre doing this?â
Zheng Sanpaoâs voice softened, but only slightly.
âBecause they are your comrades.â
âAnd by taking their punishment, you dishonour them as soldiers.â
âNow, you have a choice.â
âStand here like a fool.â
âOr run with them.â
Zhuang Yan clenched his jaw, his gaze locked onto the figures running in the sunset.
Finally, he exhaled sharplyâand took off after them.
â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦.
âBrothers!â
âLetâs sing!â
Lin Yiâs voice echoed across the track.
âIâll start!â
âOur army marches toward the sunâ¦â
âReady, sing!â
âOur army marches toward the sun,
Our feet tread upon our motherlandâs soil,
We carry our nationâs hopes on our backs,
We are an invincible forceâ¦!â
Their voices soared, harmonising with the crimson hues of the sunset.
â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦.
For the first time, Zhuang Yan felt something different inside him, something deeper than frustration, something stronger than pride. If there was one thing worth remembering about military life, it wasnât the hardships; it was the brotherhood, the shared struggles, the unyielding bond between comrades.
â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦.
From afar, Zheng Sanpao watched the recruits running beneath the setting sun. A rare smirk curled at his lips. He had already made a decision. In most recruit training programs, it took at least a month before a Vice Squad Leader was selected. Only outstanding recruits were chosen. But in the Wolf Fang Battalion, history was about to be made.
For the first time ever, a recruit would be promoted after just five days. And that recruit wasâ
Lin Yi.
