Ajax could sense the spiders gathering, at first he feared there would be countless of them but that wouldn’t make sense with the amount of prey available and the Mana density, even with the dungeon right here. Thankfully there only seemed to be a little over fifty spiders heading for him, none of them quite as large as the one he just fought.
Ajax got a good look at one of them as it scrambled along the rocky terrain after him, it was only level ninety eight, not something he had to be worried about in most cases. But this wasn’t the usual case.
Ajax could still feel the poison work trying to get a foodhold and that wasn’t to mention how his health had already dropped down to under half, he might have only taken a single direct hit but the stab added on to the amount of venom that was pumped inside of him had done a lot of damage to his internal organs.
Ajax’s lungs had suffered the most, with such a large surface area they were the most affected by the poison’s acidic quality, Ajax was having a hard time catching his breath even as he managed to push through the pain that came with every inhale.
The spiders chasing him also weren’t stupid, once they started to catch up to him they didn’t move to engage him directly. It was pretty obvious that someone who took off the leg of the matriarch with a single swing of an axe was strong enough to kill them in a single blow if they got too close. All they had to do was slow him down enough for the matriarch to catch up and engage him once more.
Ajax wasted no time on the small spiders, the one thing he couldn’t ignore was the webs they were throwing his way but all of them burned with a simple wave of fire. Even that worked to slowly whittle him down, every point of Mana not going towards Life Mana right now was bringing him closer to death.
As the little spiders swarmed behind him in greater and greater numbers one of them made the mistake of trying to engage Ajax, it thought it could land an additional attack if it jumped in and pulled itself back out with its web.
Ajax was sure the spiders didn’t realize just how ineffective their attacks were against him. Yes he was hurt and he couldn’t at the speeds he usually would but that did nothing to lower his reaction speed or his ability to process his surroundings.
Much like a physical fighter who completely ignored physical stats, the spiders could barely keep up with their own movement whereas everything was moving slowly for Ajax. He could feel the spider launch itself towards him and he didn’t even slow his run as he swapped his axe for his hammer and stopped his healing for a brief moment, just enough to launch a good sized Vibration infused [Precise Blow] crushing the head of the arachnid.
The blow killed the spider instantly but it was the shockwave from the impact that Ajax was after, it was strong enough that it tripped up most of the spiders chasing him giving him a few moments where he didn’t have to worry about them. Ajax sent his hammer back into his spacial ring and pulled out the strongest healing potion he had with him. A flick of the thumb was enough to remove the stopper and Ajax chugged it down, almost biting his tongue in his haste as he didn’t slow down his run.

Drinking while running wasn’t something he recommended in most cases but for this situation it was perfect, a few drops of the potion went down the wrong pipe as he breathed in and Ajax fought his body’s natural instinct to cough, he wanted some of the potion to go directly to the lungs so it could start healing them faster.
Ajax could feel the drain on his Stamina increase, his notification icon flashing in the corner of his vision but that was all something he could look into later for now he first had to get away.
Taking a look behind him Ajax saw that he now had a bit of a lead on the chasing spiders, with the potion starting to work he could feel his body becoming stronger. Ajax also caught a glimpse of the body of the spider he had just killed, something he made note of was that the body didn’t break down into Mana. It made almost no sense that these spiders so close to the arch didn’t actually come from the dungeon yet that seemed to be the case, either way it was something to look into after he got away.
Ajax picked up on the new addition to the chase before they announced their presence. He had already been on the lookout for them for a few days before entering the dungeon so he was well aware what they felt like in [Sense Mana].
Also unsurprisingly the birds that dived weren’t after him. They were only in the mid eighties but a flock of birds made perfect use of the morning sunrise to camouflage their approach, dropping down on the chasing spiders.
Despite the approximately ten level advantage the spiders had it was clear they weren’t expecting to be the ones ambushed. The flock of twenty birds split into groups of two or three and wasted no time working together to rip their target apart as they pulled on different parts of its body.
An ear piercing screech that left Ajax’s ears bleeding cut through the air. Ajax even picked up on small amounts of Vibration Mana. The cry came from the matriarch and it worked to confuse the birds. Unlike Ajax they couldn’t just shrug off the sonic attack and the hunted became the prey.
Ajax was fine with this outcome. As long as the spiders weren’t focused on him he didn’t much care if they decided to feed on something else. Taking advantage of their change of focus and the healing he got from the potion Ajax spared some Mana to cover himself in Shadow Mana.
Looking towards the long shadows stretching across the forest floor from the rising sun Ajax decided to try shadow walking one more time. As his foot fell on the shadow Ajax could feel his body slipping into the shadow the same way as it would if he was diving into a lake.
Unlike before Ajax had no issue getting his whole body inside and his view on the world changed. Everything went dark, he could barely make out the outside world as he looked above him, he wasn’t even running anymore, the outside world was dashing by faster than before as he willed his body along through the shadows.
Ajax had problems concentrating on his surroundings, he couldn’t smell anything, his sight was limited to an odd shifted view as he looked out through the wall that separated the shadow space from the world. His hearing was muffled, he could just barely make out the screeching of the birds as the spiders turned the tables on them, with the element of surprise gone and the stunning sonic attack of the matriarch the ten level difference was quick to show as the spiders had half the birds wrapped up in silk and the other half running away with the bodies of some of the spiders they killed in their talons.
The spiders weren’t his worry anymore. Ajax was pretty sure he had gotten away, his only focus now was in keeping up his speed as well as remaining within the Shadows. Despite his easy entrance Ajax could feel the realm was starting to push against him as he used Life Mana to heal himself and counteract the poison that was still coursing through him.
One minute was as long as Ajax managed to remain inside the shadows before he exited. He wasn’t even forced out but he had accidently jumped out when he tried to move through a clearing that had no shadows covering it. The shift during the exit was much worse than the entrance, instead of floating along, Ajax quickly had to get his feet moving under himself to regain his balance.
Taking that moment to catch his breath Ajax looked behind him to see if the spiders had given up the chase or if they were still coming after him. After ten seconds Ajax was sure the spiders had lost his tracks so he continued moving away but now he was much less focused on his speed and more on recovering from the fight.
“What a way to start the day.” Ajax muttered to himself, it was less than an hour ago that he woke up and yet he already felt like the world had chewed him up and spat him back out. Making a silent promise to himself that he would return to finish things with the spiders Ajax continued as he headed towards the ruins.
