Chapter 566

Ajax was interrupted three times before he ran out of ingredients, it wasn’t that there were any monsters left on the floor but the problem was that the Fire Mana had finished drying out the forest and forest fires had broken out. They weren’t a hassle for him to deal with but they did help him get a better picture of just how much a Floor can change due to the Floor Boss, a normal group delving this floor at an appropriate level would still have a chunk of it left to clear by the time they reached this point.
With his alchemy finished Ajax was slightly upset that there was nothing worth taking from this floor anymore, more than that his entire delve had only gotten him +1 to all stats from the previous floor and he wouldn’t be getting the bonus from this floor as it would mean causing a dungeon break with level one hundred and forty fives.
It took Ajax almost no time to get to the exit. After preparing a sturdy shelter that could handle a wild fire he went to sleep one final time before returning to his [Meditation] assisted rest.
Once he woke up Ajax pulled out the map he had of the Wild Lands. Whereas this dungeon was a clear first stop for him he now faced a decision. Did he head towards the other known dungeon or did he go towards a known location of ruins.
Tempting as another dungeon might be over the unknown rewards of a ruin Ajax decided to go towards the ruins in the end, it wasn’t because of any hidden treasure he hoped to find so much as it was the warning he had received about there potentially being a hydra roaming around the area. This was his first lead on finding any of the Ascended races.
Once he stepped out of the dungeon Ajax was surprised to find that things had changed on the outside. He had expected his little fortified position would be left alone, after all monsters had no use for the dungeon. He wasn’t sure what it was at first for a white layer covering the rock, a closer inspection showed the cover to be made of numerous strings but it wasn’t quite knitted in the same way a sweater would be.
Deciding it would be best to get away from here quickly, Ajax tried to cover himself in Shadow Mana and make a quick escape. His plan failed two steps in as Ajax discovered his first foot had stuck to the white covering breaking his Shadow Mana stealth.
The visualization helped Ajax realize what it was that he was dealing with and he couldn’t help but curse. “Spiders, why does it have to be fucking spiders.” Ajax wasted no more time on stealth, by now any spider would already be aware of his presence since the moment he stepped in its web so he switched to Fire Mana and burned himself free of the web before starting to leave again.
Surprisingly the web didn’t have almost any Mana infused into it and this made it easy for Ajax to burn himself a clear path outside of the small fort he built around the dungeon. It was this ease that made him a little overconfident and he paid for it dearly just as he was about to make a run for the treeline and leave the dungeon clearing.
[Danger Sense] remained silent despite Ajax suddenly feeling a stinger stab him in the ribs. That in itself let Ajax know he was dealing with a specialized ambush predator who countered warning Skills, the poison he could feel seeping into his body only further confirmed that.

If there was one piece of good news in all this it was that Ajax finally got a clear look at the spider that was hunting him. At level one hundred and thirty the monster didn’t seem focused on physical stats as much as it was on mental ones. Ajax could feel it in the Mana imbued in the poison running through his body as well as in the webs the spider was now spinning since it no longer had to maintain cover.
Ajax wasted no time in activating [Mana Syphon] looking to drain the Mana not only from the poison but also from the web the spider was weaving. Ajax grinned through the mounting pain caused by the poison as it saw the spider freeze as it felt the effects of [Mana Syphon] and Ajax took the chance when he was given it.
Ajax didn’t bother with a weapon as he unleashed a Vibration infused punch right into the abdomen of the spider, he could feel its stinger breaking from the impact as he sent it crushing into the earthen wall he had previously raised.
Unfortunately the spider had managed to place a few anchor points powered by Mana infused web so Ajax wasn’t able to get too much distance from the creature and he was having a hard time fighting the poison despite flooding his body with Life Mana. It wasn’t even the potency of the poison that was the issue, it was the volume. Unlike a humanoid assassin who would rely on poisons that worked with just a scratch the spider must have pumped damn near enough an entire gallon into him with that single sting.
Ajax found himself dismissing his punctured chest piece, taking out his knife and cutting the wound open in hopes of draining out a good portion of the poison before it had time to circulate his body.
In the morning rays of dawn that were starting to thread their ways through the trees the green poison stood out despite being mixed with blood, Ajax barely paid the sight a moment's attention before he once again focused on the spider.
The creature had used the time Ajax spent removing a large part of the poison from his body by weaving a small net it was now using two of its legs to try and capture Ajax with. Ajax could feel the Mana in the web and knew not only would it be much harder to free himself from that but it was also proving slightly resistant to [Mana Syphon] meaning if he did get caught it would be a moment before he could drain the Mana and free himself.
Taking stock of the situation Ajax decided the best move was to retreat. From what he could tell the spider wasn’t quite as strong as he was but that would only be the case in a straight up fight. It had set up a perfect ambush and landed it, even if he thought he would win the fight, something he wasn’t sure of, he knew he would only end up as easy prey for whatever monster they would surely attract with their battle.
The spider matriarch had followed a similar train of thought but had come to a different conclusion. It realized just how dangerous this human truly was, its ability to drain Mana from its web had shocked it so much it left itself open for a moment, a moment that was enough for the human to land a clean blow that snapped its stinger. It had to kill the human now, if he escaped it would surely return to finish the job. The matriarch had seen this happen before to other predators who had attempted to kill humans coming to the dungeon before.
With two legs weaving its web and two legs using the already woven net to try and capture Ajax the spider had a hard time moving after the retreating Ajax. At the same time Ajax could feel the poison starting to affect his body. Unfortunately this time the poison was paralytic, already Ajax could feel his breathing grow heavier as half his lungs stopped expanding to draw in air. Life Mana was strong enough to counteract it but it did mean Ajax had almost no Mana throughput left over to cast any spells for the moment.
Switching to his spear Ajax used [Cursed Slash] as he tried to keep the spider at bay without being caught in its webs. One interesting interaction with the Curse Mana came from the spider’s webs themselves where they turned dark after contact and started sticking to the spider’s legs.
Seeing the spider stuck on its own web worked against it Ajax lowered the amount of Mana he poured into counteracting the poison and switched out his spear for his axe. Infusing the axe with Magma Mana Ajax went for an overhead powerful strike that was able to remove one of the spider's legs cleanly cauterizing the wound .
As soon as he saw the leg fall to the ground Ajax pushed all the Mana back into Life Mana to counteract the poison and ran for it. The spider clearly wouldn’t be able to keep up with him right now.
The spider matriarch watched helplessly as the human ran, a powerful screech breaking the morning silence as it sent a message to all its children to stop the human, all the while knowing all they would do is give their lives to slow him down. But it would be worth it, if he got away he would return to kill it.
