Chapter 246: Yennefer, I Will Give You an Offer You Can't Refuse

Is it because of me?
Yennefer wondered. Even back at Aretuza, she and Triss often competed to be first in various aspects. Even after leaving the academy, they sometimes continued their private rivalry.
When she found a Witcher boyfriend, Triss would always gnash her teeth, declaring that she'd soon have one just like him. So, could this young man in front of her actually be...?
Yennefer smiled, dispelling the thought. Well, no matter what, I shouldn't pry into other people's private lives, even in thought. That's their personal business.
"Alright, then, what can I do for you?"
Lynn opened his mouth, but before he could state his purpose, he heard the black-haired sorceress speak again.
"Before you say anything, I want you to understand that I'm in a very bad mood right now. So, if what you've brought is bad news, I suggest you turn around and go home."
Lynn considered his words carefully. "Madam Yennefer, I've actually come with a request."
"Go on."
Lynn briefly recounted his experience of undergoing a second mutation in Toussaint. Then he said, "I hope that in winter, you can visit Kaer Morhen with us to analyze Moreau's notes on the second mutation and help us refine and optimize it. Ideally, we'd like to minimize the side effects and failure rate of the second mutation."
"I will give you an offer you can't refuse."
Before the Witcher had even stepped into the room, Yennefer had been lounging lazily. But when she heard Lynn's final promise of an "offer you can't refuse," she burst into laughter.
An offer she can't refuse... What kind of offer could a Witcher possibly make?
Geralt had fought tooth and nail just to receive a reward of three thousand florens from King Foltest. Geralt had then transformed two thousand five hundred of those florens into two diamonds, a ruby, three beautiful pieces of jade, and a captivating onyx.
He had given these jewels to Nenneke, the high priestess of Melitele's Temple, hoping she would pass all but the jade on to him as compensation for Geralt's unannounced departure one morning.
For a Witcher, these jewels were hard-won rewards obtained through life-and-death struggles; for common folk, they represented a lifetime's worth of savings... But to Yennefer, these jewels were merely insignificant trinkets. Her income from performing abortions for noblewomen alone was something a Witcher couldn't even imagine.
An offer she can't refuse...
Yennefer sat up from the sofa, leaning forward. A smile played on her lips. If Geralt had been there, he would have recognized this as a dangerous sign. Whenever Yennefer wore that particular smile, it meant someone was about to have a bad day. Geralt didn't fear Yennefer's anger; he feared her smile most of all.
"Lynn, out of respect for you being of the same school as Geralt, I'll give you a piece of free advice: Never, ever make promises lightly, because you don't know the kind of person you're dealing with, and you certainly don't know what kind of offer would truly be 'irresistible' to them."
"If you don't know, it's best not to boast, or you'll only bring trouble upon yourself."
"Thank you," Lynn bowed his head in acknowledgement. From Lynn's understanding of Yennefer, he knew this was her holding back her temper. As she said, it was because he was a Witcher like Geralt, and from the same Wolf School, that she was giving him this courtesy.
If it had been anyone else, they would likely have been magically thrown out by now.
But Lynn wasn't just anyone. He believed that if he had any virtue, even from his previous life, it was that he never undertook anything without confidence, nor spoke without certainty. He wasn't like some people, full of empty words and devoid of truth. Since he said he would give Yennefer an offer she couldn't refuse, he genuinely meant it.
Furthermore, he also knew why Yennefer had joined the dragon-hunting party. The irresistible offer he would give Yennefer was, in fact, the "reward" Yennefer desperately sought through dragon hunting.
"Madam Yennefer, thank you for your advice, but I am not speaking idly. I will indeed give you an offer you cannot refuse, because my offer is this: I will give you a child."
Yennefer's face instantly became taut and pale. She sprang up from the sofa. The sofa behind her, the surrounding tables, chairs, floor, and ceiling all twisted and distorted as if by an invisible force, accompanied by a chilling, skin-crawling sound. Her raven-black hair, like crow's feathers, stirred without a breeze, swirling behind her like venomous snakes. Her violet eyes filled with blinding magical energy.
The Wolf Head Medallion on Lynn's neck vibrated violently, jumping up to constrict his throat. This was the first time he had felt such terrifying magical power in over a year since coming down from the mountains.
In the original novels, when Yennefer had a minor disagreement with other members of the dragon-hunting party, they subdued her with just a metal sphere. Now...
He knew then.
Andrzej Sapkowski was just a writer; what did he know about Witchers? It was easy to guess.
The Elder of Shadows in Toussaint, a being standing above even high vampires, at the apex of the pyramid. Yet, he willingly remained dormant in the damp, cold caves of Toussaint... What did this mean? Did it mean the Elder of Shadows was friendly, benevolent, and didn't want to bother humans?
Of course not. It meant that the legendary sorcerers throughout human history had utterly crushed the Elder of Shadows and his vampire kind. It was out of necessity that the Elder of Shadows lived in isolation in his cave. As for his vampire kin, though they could live in the outside world, they only dared to cause minor mischief, fearing another encirclement by legendary sorcerers.
How could a truly powerful sorceress be so weak? Especially Yennefer, who was even stronger than Triss.
"I am giving you one chance now to explain yourself. If you cannot convince me, even as Geralt's friend, I will not spare you."
Under the raging, overflowing magical power, the air seemed to solidify, like thousands of tiny knives slashing across the Witcher's face. A stinging sensation spread across his cheeks. Small cuts appeared on Lynn's face, shedding a few drops of blood that dispersed into the air before being instantly atomized.
However, facing the black-haired sorceress's undisguised threat, the Witcher showed no fear.
"Madam Yennefer, I know about your relationship with Geralt, and I know you've always wanted to be a mother and have been searching for a way to restore your fertility."
"You joined the dragon-hunting party because you believed someone could perform a surgery to reverse the sorceress's infertility defect."
"But this surgery is both complex and expensive, too costly even for you, which is why you needed that dragon as payment for the operation."
