Chapter 244: A Mop Dipped in Shit

Myrgtabrakke asked, puzzled, "Leave? Witcher, are you asking me to abandon the fight? In front of my enemies? In front of my daughter?"
Lynn nodded heavily, as if to confirm to Myrgtabrakke.
"Yes, that's right, Myrgtabrakke. I don't know how it is for your dragon race, but for humans, it's precisely so."
"Humans never fight a losing battle."
Myrgtabrakke shook her head. "I don't believe we will lose."
Lynn smiled.
Dragons are dragons.
Even if they live longer than humans.
Even if their physiques are superior to humans.
But when it comes to power struggles, no species can surpass humanity.
"I don't think we will either, but unless we kill everyone, the news of Zerrikanians fighting alongside dragons will spread like wildfire to every corner of the continent."
"When that happens, do you know what will occur? The Northern Kingdoms will set aside all their disputes and jointly form a massive expeditionary force to march on Zerrikania."
"At the same time, the usurper emperor ruling the South will naturally not miss any opportunity for Nilfgaard to acquire dragons."
Borch glanced at Myrgtabrakke, whose expression was growing increasingly grim, and quickly stepped in to interject.
"Lord Lynn, your deduction is interesting, but please allow me to interrupt. Even if what you say is true, they won't reach Zerrikania."
"Only Zerrikanians know how to cross the scorching and dangerous Korath Desert."
However, Lynn spoke to him with a serious expression.
"If I were you, Lord Borch, I wouldn't be so optimistic."
"The Kingdom of Zerrikania has never severed ties with the North or South. Zerrikanian merchants have always traded and exchanged goods with the Northern Kingdoms and the Nilfgaardian Empire."
"In the mercenary market, Zerrikanian warriors occasionally sell their swords and martial arts to employers."
"If... if the worst happens, these Zerrikanian mercenaries and merchants will surely do unexpected things under coercion and temptation."
Seeing that the time was right, Lynn finally unveiled the plan he had harbored in his heart for so long.
"As I said before, why must it end in bloodshed? Myrgtabrakke, isn't it a better choice for you to simply take your child and Lord Borch to Zerrikania?"
"Anyway, the tradition of the Zerrikanian Kingdom is to worship dragons. Since this land clearly doesn't welcome you and seeks your head for their glory, why bother fighting them?"
"Even if you tear them apart, standing scarred amidst a pile of severed limbs, what meaning would that have?"
"Do you think that would showcase your bravery? That it would make humans never dare to step into the Kestrel Mountains again?"
"No, you're wrong. At that point, countless adventurers, bounty hunters, and monster slayers would swarm into the Kestrel Mountains."
"You can incinerate them with dragon fire, tear them apart with claws and teeth, you can fight indefinitely."
"But you cannot kill all challengers. You cannot keep winning forever."
"You will grow increasingly tired, your wounds will multiply, and you will gradually feel exhausted, overcome by weariness."
"But they... those who besiege you, will only keep coming, endlessly, and upon seeing your condition, they will only grow more excited, until... well, I don't need to elaborate further, do I?"
After saying this, Lynn didn't force Myrgtabrakke to declare her stance. Instead, he left the cave, retreating back into the outer passage.
He gave Myrgtabrakke some time to digest the information he had just provided.
He also gave Borch time to persuade her.
The reason Lynn strongly urged Myrgtabrakke to leave was, of course, because Lynn did not wish to be an enemy of the dragon-hunting party. He was not a demon. Why fight if bloodshed could be avoided?
Besides, if Lynn remembered correctly, Yennefer of Vengerberg, Geralt's beloved sorceress, was also among the dragon-hunting party. If a fight broke out, with swords and spells flying blindly, accidental injuries would be inevitable.
What if Yennefer cast a spell that caused casualties among the Zerrikanians, or Borch's dragon fire injured Yennefer? None of these were outcomes Lynn wanted to see.
Fortunately, Myrgtabrakke was somewhat receptive to reason. Lynn's eloquent persuasion had not been in vain. Myrgtabrakke was convinced by his rhetoric and agreed to leave the dragon's lair and return to Zerrikania with Borch.
Since an agreement had been reached, there was no time to lose.
Next, the three dragons and one human left the dragon's lair and emerged outside, reuniting with the Zerrikanians ambushed at the foot of the mountains.
Borch had originally intended to escort Lynn back to Novigrad, but Lynn declined. Although Borch's matter had concluded perfectly, Lynn still had another task to accomplish there. So, he politely refused Borch's kind offer.
Borch nodded and didn't insist further. However, he presented Lynn with a gift—an exquisitely crafted horn—telling Lynn to blow the Dragon Horn whenever he might need help in the future.
Facing such a generous gift, Lynn naturally didn't refuse and expressed his deep gratitude.
After parting ways with Borch, Thea, Vea, and Myrgtabrakke in the Kestrel Mountains, Lynn rode Nidhogg alone to the city of Holopole, not far from the Kestrel Mountains.
Though also a free city, compared to Novigrad, this city was like the flickering glow of rotten grass next to the brilliant moon in the sky, whether in terms of economy, population, or infrastructure.
Lynn had originally planned to ask around after entering the city to find out if the dragon-hunting party had returned. However, as he queued at the city gates to enter, he was questioned by the militiamen guarding the entrance about the results of the dragon hunt. This immediately made him realize that the dragon-hunting party had not yet returned.
He honestly informed the militiamen that he was not a member of King Niedamir's dragon-hunting party. With the effort of a shiny small gold coin, he learned the location of the best tavern in the city from the now cheerful militiamen.
It didn't take long for him to find the tavern. After paying a few more gold coins, he was personally led to the best room in the tavern by the smiling landlady.
Dinner was sumptuous. There was fish, roasted lamb chops, vegetable soup, cheese, and bread. In such a remote area, having all this food was quite good already.
Lynn hadn't even taken a few bites when he noticed several intense gazes fixed on him.
He turned his head.
He saw several ragged children, huddled together by the doorframe, staring unblinkingly at the steaming food in front of him. Each of their faces showed an expression of desperate longing, as they swallowed their saliva.
Lynn hadn't said anything yet.
The plump landlady burst out of the kitchen, wielding a broom with a fierce expression, shooing away the children and cursing them angrily.
They immediately scattered.
