Kellyâs POV
No! No! I canât let anyone ruin my plans. Yes! I expected this to happen since I know that Klay and Pierce are both VIP guests in this event and I have already planned about what I would do. However, the fact that the man I dearly loved and still love was standing in front of me with eyes full of happiness and longing is making my knees weak.
âKelly...â
I pushed him a little and looked at him with a confused expression.
âIâm sorry, sir. Do I know you?â
Thatâs it! Youâre doing good, Kelly. You need to disregard your feelings for the sake of your freedom and your daughterâs safety. As long as Klay is off the hook, you wonât guarantee your babyâs safety.
The voices in my head praised me for pretending not to know Pierce. And although it hurts my heart, I had to do this.
âW-What?â He sucked his breath. He looked so shocked as he stared at me in disbelief.
I shook my head. âAre you one of the guests, sir? Are you okay? Do you feel sick?â
He shook his head. âNo... No... This canât be. I know you. Even if youâre wearing thick makeup, I know itâs you, Kelly.â
Iâm sorry, Pierce. I had to do this.
âI donât know what youâre talking about, sir.â
I showed him my company ID. âMy name is Elle Young and I am the Hospitality Coordinator hired for this event. Do you want me to accompany you inside?â
He grabbed his hair and I saw how a lone tear escaped his eyes which he immediately wiped.
âPlease, donât pretend. I know itâs you, Kelly. I know you too well.â
Of course, he knows me too well.
I opened my lips to speak when someone came, interrupting us.
âElle, Iâve been looking for you all over. Oh! Who is...â It was Mary.
âHe mistook me for someone else, Mary. Iâll just accompany our guest here.â
âOkay!â
After Mary left, I looked at Pierce again. Please, donât make this hard for me, Pierce. I need to put myself and my daughterâour daughter on top of my priority.
He swallowed hard and took a deep breath. When he turned his back and palmed his face, I caressed my chest where my heart was racing too much.
He looked at me again and his eyes were lifeless again. âIâm sorry. I just... I think Iâm just tired.â
âDo you want me to accompany you inside, sir? We will prepare a private room so you can take a rest for a while.â
He shook his head and grabbed his hair again. âI-I need to leave.â
I just nodded as I watched him leave. My heart was still racing and as soon as I heard the door closed, I squeezed my eyes closed and sucked my breath.
I wiped the tears that rolled down my cheek. Itâs so hard to pretend not to know him when all I wanted was to hug him so tight as soon as I saw his face.
After calming myself down, I went back inside and did everything not to run into Klay. If I see him up close, I donât know what Iâd do to him. My emotions might explode and I might ruin my own plans.
***
I WAS sitting on my swivel chair while writing a report when I received an email from my dadâs lawyer.
A smile crept on my lips as I read that the document I asked him to do is now in processed. The ownership of my dadâs mansion will be put on my name. Plus, I asked to reopen the case of my father and the investigation is ongoing secretly.
Itâs been a week since the auction event where I ran into Pierce who immediately recognized me. I was able to get away and pretend that he mistook me for someone else, but I know him. Pierce is kinda gullible but heâs smart. I know that he wonât drop the fact that he believed that itâs me. So I had to rush my plans before he did something ridiculous.
âTalk about a smart move,â I whispered as I received another email confirming my bank loan.
I immediately transferred the money to another bank account that was owned by one of the shareholders of my dadâs company. I bought shares from two shareholders whereas the sum surpassed the share of the current CEO. This will automatically appoint me as the CEO and even if some of the board are on Klayâs side, they wonât be able to do anything because I have the highest share.
Besides, I know he would make the company bankrupt so I have to do something about it before it happens.
When I got home, Luke was sleeping on the couch and Snow was sitting on his lap, also asleep.
I walked towards them and squatted beside the couch, staring at Snow.
Baby, your daddy might do something to feed his curiosity. I donât know what to do.
âMiss Kelly...â
I gave Luke a smile. âYou worked hard again.â
The corner of his lips rose as he looked down at Snow whoâs sleeping in his arms.
âI didnât get to enjoy my childhood because I had to work early for my family. And Iâm happy that Iâm able to fulfill my childhood wish while taking care of Yuki.â
âWhy are you still single, Luke?â
He shrugged his shoulders. âI donât have time to date.â
Well, should I set him up with Mary?
âIâll carry her to the bed.â
I pulled myself up and nodded. âYes, please. Thank you.â
I walked him to the door. He faced me slowly and stared at my face as if heâs contemplating something.
I waited for him to speak and he did. âMiss Kelly... I hope you donât take this the wrong way. I just...Iâm just concerned.â
I crossed my arms and looked him in the eyes. I know Iâm not perfect. So Iâm actually waiting for someoneâs opinion. Preferably from someone who knows my story and Luke could be that someone.
âI know youâre raising her very well. Sheâs lovely. Sheâs kind. Sheâs content with life having only you. But as a child who didnât grow up with parents, I can only say itâs hard...â
He took a deep breath. âI was just like her before. Iâm happy with just my siblings because my own family doesnât want to let us in their lives. But I grew up with a hole in my heart that I canât still fill even until now. I just want you to know that itâs lonely to grow up without parents especially if you learn that theyâre alive.â
I was just standing by the door frame, completely stunned. Luke had already left but I couldnât move an inch.
I donât know... Maybe Iâll consider giving myself another chance once this is over. But for now, I canât take the risk. I just canât.
