<p>Abstract:</p>This book goes to press at a moment in the story of educa¬ tional change which may prove to be crucial to the future of the country. The government in power for at least the next five years is already involved in decisions about the future pattern of education that may well decide the future prosperity, and certainly the future character, of the nation. We are at a turning-point. 1 am convinced that the message and meaning of this book are vital to government policy, for it is concerned with the aims and purpose of education, and with the methods which inevitably help to shape those aims. The issues it raises cannot be ignored. The writing is the result of some thirty years' work in the teaching and management of higher education, especially the last fifteen years, when 1 was responsible for putting together and steering a polytechnic. It is therefore a contri¬ bution to an urgent debate based upon the hard-won experi¬ ence of the realities of the situation. And it centres on the two inescapable questions about education at any level and in any place: What should we teach? And how should we teach it? The answers to those questions will dictate the pattern of the future. <p>Résumé:</p><p>Ce livre est mis sous presse à un moment de l'histoire du changement éducatif qui pourrait s'avérer crucial pour l'avenir du pays. Le gouvernement qui sera au pouvoir pendant au moins les cinq prochaines années est déjà impliqué dans des décisions concernant le futur modèle d'éducation qui pourraient bien décider de la prospérité future, et certainement du caractère futur, de la nation.</p><p>Nous sommes à un tournant crucial. Je suis convaincu que le message et la signification de ce livre sont essentiels pour la politique du gouvernement, car il concerne les objectifs et le but de l'éducation, ainsi que les méthodes qui contribuent inévitablement à façonner ces objectifs. Les questions qu'il soulève ne peuvent être ignorées. Cet ouvrage est le résultat d'une trentaine d'années de travail dans l'enseignement et la gestion de l'enseignement supérieur, en particulier au cours des quinze dernières années, lorsque j'étais responsable de la création et de la direction d'une école polytechnique. Il s'agit donc d'une contribution à un débat urgent fondé sur l'expérience durement acquise des réalités de la situation. Il s'articule autour de deux questions incontournables concernant l'éducation, à tout niveau et en tout lieu : Que devons-nous enseigner ? Et comment devrions-nous l'enseigner ? Les réponses à ces questions dicteront le modèle de l'avenir.</p>
