1. [AFGHANISTAN].
[Large Folding Map of Afghanistan: Scale 1 Inch to 24 Miles]
Dehra Dun: Survey of India, 1883. Approx. 96 x 115 cm (46 x 38 inches) dissected and linen-backed
with some routes and borders in color. Housed in the original publisher's blind stamped green gilt cloth
covers. Very minor tears on the spine’s head and tail. The map is in sound, clean condition with just a few
small ink or pencil marks, mainly a short underlining of important cities, a contemporary signature in the
bottom left margin reads "Nicolson." A very good map.
The map "Enlarged at the Survey of India, Trigonometrical Branch, from the 6th Edition of the Map
of Turkestan by Lieu-General J.T. Walker, RE, Surveyor General of India" is in a scale of 1 inch to 24 miles.
The Turkestan Map, from which this Afghan section was taken and enlarged, was one much favoured by
players of the Great game and incorporated surveys up to 1882 much improving it over earlier editions as
it benefitted from the continued labours of such Survey leaders as Montgomerie and his Pundits and the
greater range of Russian maps available following the country's rapid military advance towards the
Pamirs. The map extends from the north where it shows Merv, Balkh and Faizabad, as far south as
Jacobabbad and Shirkapur in the lower Indus Valley and from Mashad and Turbat-i-Haidar in the west to
Srinagar in Kashmir and Ferozepore in the Punjab in the east. The print run appears to have been 1200 for
this map. An excellent detailed map for studying Afghanistan, its borders and the North West Frontier at a
period of international tension.

Very Rare Simla imprint as only 2 copies found in Worldcat.
Interesting booklet describing the plans of the General Staff of British Indian Army during the final
phase of the Mesopotamian Campaign of the WWI. This handbook contains precise information on the

territories of modern northern Iraq and north-eastern Syria
(area between cities of Deir ez-Zor, Mosul, Baghdad and
Fallujah) and was printed after the city of Bagdad had been
captured by the British Indian Army on March 11, 1917. The
commander of the rival Ottoman Sixth Army Khalil Pasha
withdrew to Mosul, and this booklet describes that area where
future advances were expected. This description includes
information about local tribes, natural resources, principal
towns and villages, communications and routes.
The handbook was printed in Simla, summer
headquarters of the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army.
The stamps on the front cover and in the text belong to the
library of the 1st Battalion of the Oxfordshire &
Buckinghamshire Light Infantry attached to 6th (Poona)

Division of Indian Army was involved in the Mesopotamian Campaign.
The 1st Battalion was moved to Mesopotamia in 1914 and remained there throughout the war.
"The area dealt with in this handbook is bounded on the north by the caravan route between Dair-
az-Zaur and Mosul, on the east by that between Mosul and Baghdad; on the south by that between
Baghdad and Fallujah; and on the west by the river Euphrates. The tract thus defined includes portions of
the Baghdad and Mosul Wilayats, and of the Sanjaq of Zaur" (Note on p. [iii]).

Large valuable collection of original
photographs from the family of Werner von Siemens
(1816-1892), a world famous German inventor and
industrialist, a founder of company Siemens &
Halske, today Siemens AG - one of the largest electro
technological firms in the world. Siemens Company
was responsible for a number of revolutionary
Siemens at the Baku oil wells inventions: first German telegraph line (1849), light
bulb and telephone station (both 1881); world’s first electric generator, or dynamo (1867), electric elevator
(1880), tramway, or streetcar (1881), trolleybus (1882), electric railway, or metro (1896) and many others.
The photographs, taken by one of
Siemens family members or a person close to
them, show the family's travel through Crimea,
Caucasus, Moscow and Saint Petersburg, which
Werner von Siemens went on with his wife
Antonie (1840-1900) and their daughter
Hertha (1870-1939) in the autumn of 1890. It
was his third and last travel there, and, as
Werner noted in his memoirs (Siemens, W.
Von. Mein Lieben. Zeuloroda, 1940), a chance
"to say the last goodbye to the Caucasus". The
family was accompanied by Dr. Friedrich Adolf
Hammacher (1824-1904), a member of
Reichstag and influential mining industrialist.
The party went from Odessa to Sevastopol,
Karl and Werner von Siemens in Gostilitsy

along the beautiful Crimean Southern
coast, visiting Yalta, Gurzuf and Imperial
palaces in Livadia - which "much
reminded us of Riviera"; then
proceeded along the Georgian shore to
Batumi and Tiflis through Borjomi,
Kutaisi and Mtskheta.
One of the main purposes of the
trip was to visit Siemens’ copper mines
and factories in Kegabeg - the biggest
copper and gold deposits of modern
Azerbaijan. Siemens purchased the
Kedabeg mines in 1867 and, as some

sources say, secretly extracted gold there.
In Tiflis the party was joined by Werner’s younger brother Carl Siemens (1829-1906), the director of
Siemens & Halske’s branch in Russia, a powerful businessman, and the Chairman of the Board of the Saint
Petersburg Commercial Bank (since 1885), and ennobled by Tsar Nicholas II in 1895.
Having visited Kedabeg and its
beautiful surroundings, including the
valley of Chamkhor Chai River called
Paradise, the travellers proceeded to
Baku, or "black city" to visit its famous
oil wells. The return trip led them to
Vladikavkaz through the Georgian
Military Road, and from there by train
to Moscow and Saint Petersburg.
This photograph collection gives a
detailed account of all places which
Siemens' visited on the trip. Revealing a
good artistic perspective, the pictures
show numerous landscapes - Caucasus Siemens‘ Copper Factory in Kedabeg
mountains, gorges, passes and peaks;
Crimea’s palaces and vineyards,
Georgian churches, Kedabeg industrial
landscapes and interiors of the Siemens
factory (including welcoming copper
plaque with the inscription
"Willkommen" on it); Baku oil towers;
Tiflis markets; Vladikavkaz train station;
Moscow Kremlin and modern Kutuzovky
prospect; Nevsky prospect in Saint
Petersburg
and Carl von Siemens’ estate Gostilitsy,
56 kilometers from Saint Petersburg.
Also very interesting are the
"personal" photographs including
numerous portraits of Werner, Carl, and
Dr. Hammacher - on the ship, with
Nevsky prospect, Saint Petersburg

hunting guns, or together with Georgian men; Antonie and
Hertha von Siemens on picnics, riding or looking at places
of interest. Also fascinating are the pictures of the locals -
street vendors, military men, sailors, 3rd class passengers
of the ship, peasants, women and, of course, children -
brave or timid, but always curious, at play or in school and
sometimes even literally standing on their heads.

Overall, this unique collection presents us an important
personal view of the Siemens family, one of the leading
industrialist families in history, and also a bright and vivid
picture of the 19th century Russia and its people. The trip is
well documented and described in p.49-62 of Werner von
Siemens' "Kaukasusreisen (1942)" which is included with this
collection.

by Fedor Reshetnikov and housed in a custom made grey slip case. Corners slightly bumped, otherwise a
very good strong set.
One of the most famous Soviet polar books and illustrated account of the celebrated rescue
operation conducted to save the crew and passengers of the Soviet steamship Chelyuskin in April 1934.
The ship went on the expedition under the command of Otto Schmidt (1891-1956), with the main goal to
determine the possibility to travel by non-icebreaker through the Northern Maritime Route (North-East
Passage) in a single navigation season. Chelyuskin’s captain was the Soviet polar navigator Vladimir
Voronin (1890-1952), who had already successfully gone the same route the previous year on the
icebreaker "Alexander Sibiriakov."
The Chelyuskin travelled almost the whole route, but in the Chukchi Sea became ice-bound and
drifted for almost five months until on the 13th of February 1934 the ship was crushed by the ice and
sunk within two hours. 104 people, including two babies (one of them was born during the travel in the

Kara Sea) had to camp on the ice for almost two months,
surviving extremely low temperatures, high winds and a
constant risk of the ice to crack (which happened several
times). But people’s spirits were high: they built a camp,
small airport and signal posts, established radio connection
with the outer world, and even published a manuscript
newspaper "We won’t give up!" ("Ne Sdasimsia!"). The
Soviet government meanwhile tried to organize the rescue
operation to save the Chelyuskintsy ("Chelyuskinites").
Finally a team of Russian polar pilots (Anatoly Liapidevsky,
Vasily Molokov, Nikolai Kamanin, Mavriky Slepnev, Mikhail
Vodopianov and others) in March-April 1934 took all 104
wreck survivors off the ice, using the Vankarem village on
the Chukotka peninsula as the air base.

The whole event was widely covered by the Soviet press which praised the courage and optimism
of the Chelyuskintsy, and skills and heroism of Soviet pilots. In Moscow the members of the expedition
had a meeting with the Soviet leaders, while the eight pilots who saved them became the first Heroes of
the Soviet Union.

This special commemorative edition about Chelyuskin’s Voyage and the rescue operation was
published just three (!) months after all the Chelyuskintsy were saved. It was called "The Heroic Epic" and
included a wide variety of written and photographic material showing all aspects of the famous
expedition. There are memoirs and essays of the expedition members, their drawings, facsimile of "We
won’t give up!" newspaper; articles about the history of Russian polar exploration, geography and
hydrography of the Arctic, researches which Cheyuskintsy conducted during the expedition. The
illustrative material includes numerous photographs made by the members of the expedition: a photo
chronicle of their life on the ice, maps, charts, and portraits.
The book’s design is an example of Constructivism, with such prominent Soviet artists as P.
Freiberg, S. Telingater, N. Sedelnikov working on it.

General of the Caucasus]
[Collection of Photographs of Tiflis] Views of Interiors of the Governor-General’s Palace; with a
Printed Portrait of Prince Dondukov-Korsakov while Governor-General.
ca 1883. Seven large photographs mounted on cardboard leaves from both sides. Cardboard leaves
are 43x35 cm (17x13 ¾ inches); views of Tiflis - 40x28 cm (15 ½x11 inches), palace photos - 28x22 cm
(11x9 inches). Photographs are signed in pencil in French and English and dated from 1883 to 1885. The
leaves used to be mounted in an album; the fourth leaf includes four small photographic views (18x14 cm,
or 7x5 ½ inches) of the interiors of a historical museum in Salzburg. Portrait printed on a thick Watman
paper approx. 60x48 cm (23 ¾x18 ¾ inches), the image is 46,5x35,5 cm (18 ¼x14 inches).
The collection includes photographs of the interiors of the Governor-General’s palace in Tiflis,
namely two views of the Salon Oriental where Governor’s private collections were housed; and views of
his Private Office and Boudoir. They are supplemented with a portrait of the palace’s owner himself,
Prince Alexander Mikhailovich Dondukov-Korsakov, Russian influential military man and statesman, the
commander of the Russian occupation corps in Bulgaria in 1879-80, a member of the State Council of
Imperial Russia and a Governor-General of Caucasus in 1882-1890. Dondukov-Korsakov distinguished
himself during the Caucasus Campaign, Crimean War 1853-56 and Russo-Turkish War 1877-78; he held
several high Imperial orders, including Order of St. Anne I class, Order of St. Alexander Nevsky, and the
highest order of chivalry of Russian Empire - Order of St. Andrew.
On the portrait the Prince is depicted sitting in an armchair, wearing the uniform with the Order of
Saint George IV Class which he was awarded with on the 28th of December 1854 for a prowess in combat
(Order of Saint George is the highest military decoration of the Russian Empire and nowadays Russia). The
portrait originally produced in pastel is signed "Mary 1883."
The views of Tiflis include ruins of the Narikala fortress, overlooking the city (the photograph signed
"Ruins of the ancient Georgian fortress"); "General view of the city from the north" with Kura stream on
the foreground; and "The Salalaki Ward of the City." The latter, called Sololaki, in the 19th century
became one of the best, most expensive, "European" style districts of Tiflis.

Rare Portuguese Indian (mostly, Goan) Imprints
Initiated by a Prominent Colonial Administrator Joaquim Heliodoro da Cunha Rivara (1809-1879)

Our interesting Goan imprints were published in the second half of the 19th century on the
initiative of Joaquim Heliodoro da Cunha Rivara, General Secretary of the Goa Governor General in 1856-
1870. Rivara was a successful administrator, doing excellent work in the improvement of state services
and public education, but his most notable contribution in Goa was as a historian, highly interested in the
studies of the history of Portuguese presence in India.
In 1862, in addition to the functions of the General Secretary, Rivara was appointed as Royal
Commissioner in the East. The new responsibilities led to several trips around the Indian subcontinent,
which resulted in an extensive and very valuable Portuguese-Eastern Archive (1857-1876), where he
transcribed in chronological order, all known documents relating to the presence of the Portuguese in
India. Rivera also became a pioneer in the study of Concani language, hitherto generally regarded as a
mere dialect.
During his almost 22-years stay in Goa (Rivara left for Portugal in 1877) he initiated a large
publishing activity, writing several articles and books on the history of Goa himself, but also inspiring quite
a large group of Goan intellectuals into historical researches. Those publications are still significant
historical sources, as they often for the first time present to the public numerous important documents
from Goan archives. The copy run of these imprints was very small, their rarity was proved by searching e-
catalogues of the biggest libraries of the world. The quality of the editor’s work in these Goan imprints is
high, including Indexes, references and editorial comments and Prefaces where necessary. Rivara was also
a noted bibliophile and librarian, for fifteen years working as a director of a library in his home town,
Évora, - and his editions with their elegant wrappers, vignettes and various types testify to Rivara’s good
taste in book design.

A history of the Diocese of Saint Thomas of Mylapore (São
Tomé de Meliapore), attributed to Cunha Rivara. The Diocese
derives its name from the site of its cathedral in which the 6
Apostle St. Thomas reportedly first preached Christianity in 52 AD. It was founded in 1606, and
subsequently became British, as it was located three and a half miles away from Fort George, future
Madras, founded in 1644. Cunha Rivara history of the Portuguese Diocese’s relations with the British and
French, supports his work with over 150 official documents, both Portuguese and English.
