TheMaltaIrrigationDistrictispartoftheMilkRiverprojectandincludes42,492irrigableacres.
Thedistrictwasconstructedduringtheyears1909through1923andisanoldproject. Wateris
suppliedbyadiversiondamfromtheMilkRivertotheDodsonSouthCanal. Thedistributionsystem
facilities,whichthedistrictoperatesandmaintains,needaprogramofpartialrebuilding.
ThefacilitiesproposedforrebuildingaretheeightcheckstructureslocatedIntheDodsonSouth
Canal. Thenewcheckstructureswillhave10-foot-wideopeningsasopposedtothecurrent5-foot
openings. Thenewstructuresalsowillhaveautomatedgatesthatcanbetterhandlespringicejams,
whichwillenablemorewatertobecapturedearlierinthespringforirrigationandimproveddelivery.
ThisalsowillallowthediversionofearlyspringrunoffintoNelsonReservoirforuselaterintheseason.
ItisimportantthatNelsonReservoir,locatedfarthestdownstreamfromtheMilkRiverproject,befilled
earlyinthespringbecausethePipingPloverbird,anendangeredspecies,nestsduringMayandJune
onthewater'sedge. Fillingthereservoiratthislatertimewouldfloodthenestsandruinanychanceof
ahatchfortheyear.
TECHNICALASSESSMENT (PreparedbyDNRC)
DNRCreceivesapplicationsforirrigationsystemimprovementsduringeachWaterDevelopment
andRenewableResourceDevelopmentgrantcyclebecausenootherstatefundingsourceisavailableto
helpfundthesetypesofprojects. ThroughoutmuchofMontana,agricultureisthedominantindustry.
Thus,anirrigationproject'sphysicalandeconomicwelfareisofprimeimportance.
Montana'slargestwaterwithdrawalareasarethosewiththegreatestirrigationuse. Infact,
agricultureuses96.5percentofallwaterconsumedinMontana."" Rehabilitatingandimproving
irrigationsystemsarenecessarytopreserveagriculture'seconomicwelfare. Forexample,justafive-
percentoverallwatersavingsonagriculture'spartwouldfreeenoughwaterforallothercurrentwater
