Moses Cleaveland: he was single, a lawyer /only surveyed here one year,1796,
died in 1806 at age 52 (10 yrs. aftersurveying here)

The second settler, BenjaminFitch, settled inBedford, shortlyafterNobles, onMain Street (which is now
Broadway) where Tarbell meetsBroadway. Fitchbecameknown forhis sturdy, comfortable rockers, and is
the founder oftheTaylorChairCompany.
This becamethe Township ofBedford in 1823 and latercalledBedford Township. It is a 5 miles square plot,
or 25 squaremiles.
Bedford got its name onthe suggestion ofDanielBenedictwho named it afterhisnativevillage ofBedford,
Connecticut. Bedford Connecticut isnowlocated inthe StateofNewYork. There was a stateboundaly
dispute and the town went to New York.
Daniel Benedict was born inBedford, Connecticut and in 1823 he wasvocal inthe committee naming the
townships.

1813: Elijah Nobles-firstperson to move into BedfordTownship.
The HudsonsofHudson OH gaveElijah Nobles lot 46 for free -on condition hemakecertain im
land. Nobles' property wason TinkersCreek Road, and 3 miles from his nearestsettlel

BITS'N PIECES OF VILLAGE HISTORY
During the Revolutionary War days the State of Connecticut claimed
three and a halfmillion acres of land ih northeast Ohio. They called it
their Western Reserve, and our village was part of that land saved for
future expansion ofConnecticut. Even before the war for independence
fromEnglandended,theUnitedStatesCongressworked onadocument
to establish policy for organizing frontier territories into states. One
principle ofthis document was that any new state entering the union
would not be a "colony" ofanother, thus states claiming western lands
would have to cede them tothenationalgovernment.
Preferring to profit from their western lands before the Northwest
Ordinance waspassed in 1787, the State ofConnecticut began efforts to
sellsectionsofitsWesternReserve.OnegrouporganizedTheConnecticut
Land Company andcommissioned General Moses Cleaveland to survey
the landandmap it outintotownshiplotsoffivesquaremiles.In1796 and
1797Cleaveland'ssurveyingparty did so.Thecompany knewthiswestern
land,beingfertile and relatively freefromstones, wouldmakeexcellent
farmland.
Oneofthetownshipsthesurveyorsmapped out in 1797wasTownship 6
in Range 11. In about 1810 it was surveyed again, and the square was
gridded intoonehundredsmallersquare lots. Afewyearslater, back east
in Connecticut where a committee met to name the Western Reserve
townships, Daniel Benedict named Township 6 in Range 11 after his
village ofBedford, Connecticut. Walton Hills was part ofBedford Town-
ship from1797until 1951. -
