This book, like all my individual endeavours, is the culmination of a
collective process with the people who have encouraged and supported
me. Some of those people have been part of my life since an early age, my
parents Patricia and John, and my teachers. Others are more recent in
my personal and professional life. In particular I would like to thank the
authors of each of the chapters; my colleagues at Leicestershire Partnership
NHS Trust and Leicester General Hospital and Joanne Applewhite for her
perseverance and administrative skills. I would also like to thank Sanaz

I am fortunate to be have been brought up, taught and worked with many
people who provided me with great inspiration and encouragement in my
life. From early on in life, my parents John and Margaret and my brothers

Leamington Spa Rehabilitation Hospital for their advice and support in

Contributors
Claire Pavlou is a clinical psychologist at the Royal Leamington Spa
Rehabilitation Hospital in Warwickshire and has worked in the field of
clinical psychology and neuropsychology for 11 years. She obtained an
MA in health psychology at Coventry University followed by a clinical
doctorate at Coventry University and Warwick University. Claire’s interest
in working with people with multiple sclerosis (MS) began 15 years ago
when volunteering and working at a specialist care centre for people with
MS. She now delivers clinical neuropsychology interventions as part of a
specialist community neurorehabilitation team for people with MS. Claire
also works for younger adult inpatient and outpatient services providing
neurorehabilitation for people with a range of brain injuries and neurological
conditions, including people in minimally conscious states. She also lectures
on the clinical psychology doctorate course at Coventry University and the
University of Warwick, Warwickshire. Between 2002 and 2006, Claire was
a trustee for Headway Coventry where she was involved at every level with
the organisation and taking a lead role in raising awareness of the needs of
people with ‘hidden disabilities’ caused by brain injuries.
Declan Mc Nicholl studied Psychology at Queen’s University, Belfast
and obtained an MSc in clinical psychology at Leicester University.
Initially he worked in adult mental health and then specialised in clinical
neuropsychology. He later completed his doctorate of clinical psychology
at Salomon’s, Canterbury Christ Church University. He is also a trained
psychotherapist in the Personal Construct Psychology approach. He
currently works as a consultant clinical neuropsychologist and is the Head
of Department of Clinical Neuropsychology at Leicestershire Partnership
NHS Trust. He is an honorary lecturer in the Department of Clinical
Psychology, University of Leicester. He works with people who have a wide
range of neurological disorders and neuropsychological challenges. Declan
has many links with voluntary sector organisations and is a trustee of his
local Headway House.
Gerald Burgess is a clinical psychologist at the Department of Clinical
Neuropsychology within the Leicestershire Partnership Trust. He works
predominantly with adult acquired brain injury patients in both acute
inpatient and outpatient clinic settings. As a part of this work, Gerald has
conducted trainings for frontline staff in health and social services and for
family and carers of brain-injured patients on issues of personality, behaviour,
