Foreword
The world’spopulation isincreasing, and by2050 it is projectedto increase by more than35
percent.Weneedtodoubleourproductiontosupplyenoughfood,feed,fuel,andfibertothe
growing population. This need is further challenged by climate change and extreme weather
conditions. Agricultural land area is relatively constant and even tends to decrease. To feed
our people, we need both options, i.e., optimizing the existing agricultural land and opening
newagriculturalland.Everycountryhasdifferentstrategies.
Narrowingyieldgapintheexistingagriculturallandhasbecomethemaineffortworldwide.
Innovative farming systems have been developed to make agriculture more efficient in main-
taining high production. In Indonesia, our agroecosystem is divided into ricelands (irrigated
and rainfed), drylands (dry and wet climate), and wetlands (tidal and in-land agricultural
land).TheshortageofagriculturallandinIndonesiameanswetlandsneedtobeconvertedto
agriculturaluse.
Consideringthelargepotentialofwetlandforagriculture,wetlandisthemainfocusforthe
futureofagricultureinIndonesia.Weneedtodevelopitprofitablyandsustainably.Technolo-
giestomapandoptimizewetlandareavailableworldwideandreadytobescaledup.
Suchbestpracticesshouldbedocumentedasareferenceforwetlanddevelopment.
This book reviews and discusses current progress on mapping and managing tropical wet-
lands for agricultural development. It also presents the latest technologies, techniques, chal-
lenges, ideas on wetland management, and suggestions for future research needs. I am
confidentthatthisreferencewillbeavaluableresourceformanyyearstocomeforscientists,
students,andpolicy-makers.
