illuSt「ated. 0fthese,A.(Andlat/1e'nus),natsunaga1andA.(Andlathe,mis) tobirantlsare
CollectedfromtheJapanesemainland,andA.(At/1e,ne11us)naokil iscollectedfromthe
RyukyuIslands.
ThegenusAthemusLEWIS,1895,wasestablishedforaJapanesespecies,Te(lepho_
「uSSutu「e11uSMOTSCHULSKY,1860,andatthesametime,CantharisattristataKIEsEN-
WETTER,1874,wastransferredtolt.ManyJapanesespecieswerelatertransferredfrom
othergenera,oraddedasnewspecies,toAthemusbysubsequententomologists.Until
now, forty-one species ofAthemus havebeen recorded from Japan including the
RyukyuIslands(TAKAHAsHI,1998).However,sometaxonomicalproblemsstillremajn
aboutJapanesespecies.
Inrecentyears,wehavereexaminedtheJapanesespeciesofAthemuspreviously
recordedaswereunidentified,and foundthatat leastthreeofthemarenew toscience.
Ofthese,twowerecollectedfromtheJapanesemainlandandshouldbelongtothesub-
genusAndrathemusWITTMER,1978,whiletheotheronewascollected fromthesouth-
ern part of the Ryukyu Islands and should belong to the subgenus Atheme11us
WITTMER, 1972 (IMASAKA & YAMAJI,1989; IMASAKA & ABIRU, 1989; IMAsAKA &
NAKAMURA,1993;anonym,1997).Theywillbedescribedinthepresentpaper.

fromhumerustomiddlearea,developmentofwhichisvariablewithindividuals.Body
closelycoveredwithfinepalepubescence;apicalmarginofclypeusandlateralmar-
ginsofpronotum fringedwithpalebristles;eachelytronprovidedwithintermingled
palebristlesinadditiontoprimarypubescence,thoughtheybecomemuchsparser in
anteriorhalf.
Bodyveryslender.Headslightlyshorterthanitswidth;dorsumdepressedalong
theapicalmarginofclypeusandinlateralareasbeforeeyes, faintly depressedalong
themid-line;surfacesmoothwithfaintlustre,closelywithminuteandindistinctpunc-
tures;clypeusarcuateatapicalmargin;eyes large,globularandstrongly prominent,

Elytraconjointly155(1.50-1.61)timesaswideaspronotum,3.71(3.39-3.81)
timesaslongaswide,thesidessubpara11e1thoughslightlyconvexatbasal fourth;dor-
sumcloselyandrugoselypunctate,thoughweaklyinbasalpart;costaehardlyrecog-
nizableoneachelytron.
Legsconsiderablyslender;eachfemurmostlystraight;eachtibiamostlystraight
though feeblyarcuateat thebase;eachouter clawof foreandmiddlelegsprovided
withathumb-shapedtoothatthebase,theotherclawssimple.
Malegenitalia:- Ventralprocessofeachparamerestraightandslightlyleaning
inwards,eachdorsalplateroundedattheapex,innermarginfaintlyconcave.Eachlat-
erophysisslightlycurvedtowardstheapexofdorsalplate,withitsapexsubtruncated
andpointedatthetip.Innersaclengthenedbehin aslongastegmen(Figs 7-11).
Lengthofbody:7.55mm(intheholotype; range6.40-7.80,measured fromthe
anteriormarginofclypeustotheapicesofelytra);breadthofbody:1.55(1.30-1.60)
mm(measuredatthewidestpartofconjointelytra).
Female. Bodysomewhatlongerandwider thaninthemale.Apicalmarginof
clypeussubtruncated.Eyesnotsolargeasinthemale, ratioofthediameterofaneye
to interocularspace l:2.0.Antennaealittleshorter thanin themaleand lackinga
grooveoneachsegment.Pronotum0.83-0.96timesaswideashead,0.92-1.05times
as longas wide.Elytraconjointly 148-1.64timesaswideaspronotum,3.10-3.67
timesaslongaswide.Eighthabdominalsternitedeeplyemarginateoneachsideof
terminalmargin, forminglargeroundedlateral lobesandawidemedianlobe,thelatter
ofwhichisnotchedatthemiddleandroundedoneachside(Fig. l2).

Malegenitalia:- Ventralprocessofeachparamerestraightandleaninginwards,
eachdorsalplateroundedattheapex,slightlyexpandedinwards.Eachlaterophysis
curvedtowardstheapexofeachdorsalplate,pointedatthetip. Innersaclengthened
behin aslongastegmen(Figs.13-15).

guished fromthelatterbythewhollyyellowbodyandthedorsalplatesofthemale
genitaliaslightlyexpandedinwards.
