CFAR was founded in 1985 with the aim of developing Freudian
and Lacanian psychoanalysis in the UK. Lacan’s rereading and
rethinking of Freud had been neglected in the Anglophone world,
despite its important implications for the theory and practice of
psychoanalysis. Today, this situation is changing, with a lively culture
of training groups, seminars, conferences and publications.
CFAR offers both introductory and advanced courses in
psychoanalysis, as well as a clinical training programme in Lacanian
psychoanalysis. It can provide access to Lacanian psychoanalysts
working in the UK, and has links with Lacanian groups across the
world. The CFAR Library aims to make classic Lacanian texts
available in English for the first time, as well as publishing original
research in the Lacanian field.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Annie Tardits studied Philosophy at the École Normal Superieure.
She is a Freudian psychoanalyst practicing in Paris. She has pub-
lished a number of studies on psychoanalytic theory and practice
and on psychoanalysis and artistic creation, in particular her paper
in Joyce and Lacan, edited by Jacques Aubert, and a paper on psy-
choanalysis and anthropology “Lacan and Lévi-Strauss in 1956” in
the review Figures de la Psychanalyse.
The translator, Marc du Ry, is a psychoanalyst working in London
and a member of CFAR. He also runs academiclanguages.com.

Introduction
Freud gave up the therapeutic benefits of hypnotic suggestion; he
also limited the tools of the treatment to a speech invited to speak
of what it did not know it knew. From that point on he came up
against the facts of resistance, amnesia, and transference. To
account for them, he constructed some theories which scandalized
the way we think: the theories of repression, of the unconscious, of
libido and of the death drive. Can one learn these, and if so how?
Can one learn to make one’s neurosis intelligible to someone else
and spark their desire to separate from their symptoms ... and if so
how?
Applied to psychic suffering, psychoanalysis has a rather para-
doxical relation to therapeutics: it has to suspend the therapeutic
aim and encourage, by means of the transference neurosis, the
development of a new form of neurosis. It is driven less by the
desire to cure, console, or pardon than a desire to know and a desire
for difference.
It is within the field of science, yet it has a curious relation
to science: by insisting on the truth of what is said in the symp-
tom, it recognizes the incidence of sexuality in the psyche, there
where modern science has defined itself by banishing the truth of
