For this new edition, the author has revised and updated the entire text and bibliography, and extensively expanded the volume's treatment of the modern and contemporary periods. The book has been completely redesigned with more than 400 illustrations - half of them in colour - and a series of valuable new features including maps, time charts and architects' biographies.</p><p><br></p><p>Patrick Nuttgens (1930-2004), Professor of Architecture at the University of York and then Director of Leeds Polytechnic, was also a writer and broadcaster on architectural and educational subjects.<br></p><p><br></p><p>Résumé :</p><p>Tout au long de l'histoire, la création et le façonnement de l'environnement bâti ont été à l'avant-garde de l'activité humaine. L'histoire de l'architecture est le récit rigoureux de la façon dont des hommes et des femmes ingénieux et imaginatifs ont pris les besoins humains les plus élémentaires et les ont transformés en certaines des plus grandes manifestations de la civilisation humaine.</p><p><br></p><p>Chaque chapitre retrace une étape du développement de l'architecture, divisant le livre en unités d'étude naturelles, et les illustrations et plans sont étroitement liés au texte. Pour cette nouvelle édition, l'auteur a révisé et mis à jour l'ensemble du texte et de la bibliographie, et a largement développé le traitement des périodes moderne et contemporaine. L'ouvrage a été entièrement remanié et comporte plus de 400 illustrations, dont la moitié en couleur, ainsi qu'une série de nouveaux éléments précieux, notamment des cartes, des diagrammes temporels et des biographies d'architectes.</p><p><br></p><p>Patrick Nuttgens (1930-2004), professeur d'architecture à l'université de York, puis directeur de l'école polytechnique de Leeds, était également écrivain et animateur sur des sujets architecturaux et éducatifs.<br></p>
