Writing this book has been an amazing experience for me on so many levels,
and a huge number of people have contributed to it—directly and indirectly—
and they all deserve recognition and thanks for their part.
First and foremost I have to thank Catharine Steers for her seemingly end-
less patience, encouragement, kindness, and understanding through what has
been, undoubtedly, a very challenging time for me. Catharine, you have been
involved in this project from the very beginning and you had the vision to see
what I could see and get me started on this path to where I am at now. At some
points I felt like I might have “bitten off more than I could chew,” but with
your guidance, everything worked out just perfectly in the end, so thank you
so much. As well as Catharine I would also like to thank Carlin and Melissa
at Focal Press/Elsevier for their involvement in the project, and all of the other
people who have played a part, behind the scenes, in taking this idea of mine
and turning it into a reality. I wish I knew all of your names, but sadly, I don’t.
Nonetheless you have my wholehearted thanks and gratitude.
Next up is my very good friend, colleague, collaborator, and most recently,
my “second opinion guy,” Alex Sowyrda. We have worked together a lot over
the years and it has always been a blast. I am glad you have been involved in
this, my latest project. I have to apologize for some of the crazy deadlines I hit
you with, but you always came through when I needed you. Next time around
I promise that I will be more organized and won’t give you such a hard time!
There are a lot of people in the music industry who have helped me get to
where I am today, both professionally and creatively. I can’t possible write my
thanks here without paying my respects to those who have taught me what
I know and enabled me to pass on my knowledge and experience. There are
too many to mention all of you, but my greatest thanks must go to: Alex, Matt,
Paul, Julian, Phil, Clive, Billy, Andy G, Nigel, Mark, and Danny H. Without all
of you (and all of the others) I wouldn’t be doing what I am doing and my life
would be much less interesting.
I certainly wouldn’t be here without Matt Houghton and the rest of the team at
Sound On Sound magazine, who gave me my “big break” in writing and ignited
the flame that now burns within me. I need to thank you for the chance you
took on an “unknown” writer for your magazine, and ultimately, for planting
the seed for the idea of this book.
I also have to thank my family and friends for getting me started making
music, for putting up with all the noise I have made over the years, for smiling

reassuringly through my dreadful playing when I was learning, and for any-
thing else I may have forgotten.
To my son, Ben, I hope this book proves to you that anything is possible with
effort and determination, and, perhaps most importantly, belief: belief in
yourself and the belief of others in you. I also hope you realize that, in years
to come, I will support and encourage you to follow your dreams in the way
others have done for me.
And, finally, I can’t write my thanks here without mentioning someone who
has, for the longest time, been nothing short of my ultimate source of con-
fidence. Hayley, the way you convince me that I am capable of anything
I set my mind to has had an incredible effect on my life. Here I am, writing
thanks for a book I could never have written were it not for your kindness and
encouragement. I remember, not long after we first met, you telling me that
I had “a way with words.” Well I guess there may have been some truth in that
after all! So here, many years later, is the result of all you have done for me,
and I simply couldn’t have done it without you. I hope that one day I may be
able to repay the kindness.
