With the Name of Allah,
theAll-Merciful, the Most Merciful
TheImam,the‘Allamah,thediscerningand judiciousoceanof
knowledge, Muhammad ibn Isma‘11 al-Sana'anl, may Allah have
mercyon him,said:1
All praise is due to Allah who does not accept the Tawhtdof
His Lordship from His bondsmen unless and until they single
Himoutfor Tawhidinworship-HimandHimalone:theydonot
set up partners with Him, they do not supplicate to any other
than Him, they do not place their reliance in any other besides
Him,in all circumstances they take refugewith Him,theycallon
Him with His Beautiful Names only,2 and they do not seek the

means of reaching Him through taking intercessors,“Who can
intercede withHimexcept by HispermissionV*
I bear witness that thereis noneworthyof worshipsaveAllah
Alonehavingnopartners,4 [takingHimas the]Lord and deityto
beworshipped.I bearwitness thatMuhammad is His bondsman
and Messenger who was commanded to“say: Ipossessnopowerto
harm or benefit myself except asAllah wills/* and sufficient is Allah
as witness; peace and blessing be upon him, his family, and all
thosewhofollowhiminkeepingfaultanddefectafarand purify-
ing their hearts from every vitiating belief.

Thisismytreatise,TathirahPtiqdd'anAdranalIlhad\whichIfelt
compelled to write and obliged to compose due to what I have
seen and come to learn of, with certainty,6 of the bondsmen in
thevariouscities,villages,and allcountriessuch asYemen,Syria,
Egypt,Najd,andTihamah,takingpartners[besides Allah].What
is being referred to is their belief in graves7 and in some living
peoplewhoclaimtohaveknowledgeofunseenmattersandclaim

believethattheresidentofthegravecanremovetribulation,oraidagainstan
enemy,orcausetheraintofallfromthesky,oralleviatedistress,orfulfilaneed,or
intercede with Allah.This is thestate of many whocircumambulate graves,
consecrateoathstothem,sacrificetothem,andsupplicatetothemratherthan
Allah.Thisisthegreatestofevils.

to experience 'unveilings/8 yet at thesame time beinga wicked
sinner: one who does not attend the Masjid with the Muslims,
onewhoisnotseenbowingandprostratingforthesakeofAllah,
onewho knows not theBook and theSunnah,and does not live
in dread of the Resurrection and theJudgment.
It is thereforeincumbenton me to condemn that which Allah
has ordered to be condemned so that I do not become of those
who conceal what Allah has ordered to be divulged.9
Know that there are certain fundamental matters which form
thefoundationsofthereligion.Fromthemostimportantof these
that the Muwahhidin10 must know are:
1.Itis knownin the religion by necessitythateverythingin the
Qur’an is correct and not false, truthful and not a lie, guidance
and notmisguidance,knowledgeandnotignorance,andcertainty
containingnodoubtwhatsoever.Thisfundamentisof such para-
mount importance that one’s Islam, man, and acknowledgment
