Fourth graders Olivia Van Pelt, Kareena Schmidt,
and Montana Kingsley stood by the bike racks in front
of their school. None of the girls looked very happy at
all considering the fact that tomorrow was Halloween—
and it was also Friday. They should have definitely been
in a much better mood.
Olivia’s brown hair blew in her eyes. She brushed it
out of the way with her right hand, then looked at her
two friends with a disgusted look on her face.
“It’s just our luck to get in Miss Moody’s class,” she
said. “The other fourth grade classes get cool Halloween
parties with pizza, costumes, and stuff—and what do
we get? Nada! Nothing! Zilch!”
Montana nodded her head in agreement. She was
just barely the shortest of the three girls, but they were
almost identical in height, about four foot seven.
Montana’s beautiful green eyes got really big as
she suddenly switched into her best dramatic actress
mode.
“Why, Olivia!” she exclaimed throwing her right arm
into the air for dramatic effect. “You ungrateful little

snob! Costumes and pizza are so boring ... so yesterday!
Besides, did you forget? If we’re good all day tomorrow,
Miss Moody promised us we could watch an incredible
educational program the last half hour!”
Kareena’s beautiful dark eyes sparkled as she
decided to try to match Montana’s dramatic acting
performance. She suddenly became the most excited
girl on the planet.
“Oh! An educational program!” she said with great
dramatic flair. “I live for educational programs! They’re
so much better than nasty pizza and disgusting costumes!
Miss Moody really knows how to celebrate Halloween!
Nothing says Halloween like an educational program!”
They all laughed. Somehow, they had managed to
keep their sense of humor so far this school year, but
their situation was no joking matter. Being stuck in
Miss Moody’s class was a real bummer!
Miss Moody had been teaching at Sakakawea
elementary School in Mandan, North Dakota, for as
long as anyone could remember. To put it bluntly, she
was not a happy person. In fact, no one even remembered
the last time she’d even smiled. Her students—and
many of the parents—actually called her Bad Moody
behind her back. She deserved the nickname!
“enough of all this,” Montana insisted. “Let’s discuss
something fun—like our costumes for tomorrow

night.”
“good idea!” said Olivia, suddenly feeling a little
better. “I’ve got a suggestion. Why don’t you two bring
all your costume stuff over to my house tonight after
you eat. My mom can help us put the finishing touches
on our costumes. She loves doing stuff like that.”
“Sounds like a plan,” said Montana. “I’ll ask my
parents and give you a call when I get home.”
“Me too,” said Kareena.
