Preface to the Eleventh Edition
As the International Biotechnology Directory enters its second decade of
publication, the rapid growth of the industry shows little sign of abating. Over
1000 new entries have been added to this edition and over 4000 existing entries
have been revised.
The majority oft he new entries have been added in seven countries; Australia,
France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, the UK. and, of course, the US. This brings
the total number of entries in the directory to over 10,000. Next year we aim
to concentrate on developments in other regions, such as Japan, Scandinavia,
the rest oft he EC and South America, continuing our commitment to providing
accurate information on biotechnology companies and research in major
markets throughout the world.
Whilst we aim to accommodate all those companies which wish to be listed in
the directory, inevitably several hundred existing entries have to be removed
each year in order to prevent the directory becoming unreasonably large. These
include entries for which we have not received or been able to find up-to-date
information and also certain entries which are no longer considered to be of
specific significance to biotechnology as the industry continues to evolve.
One of the major strengths of the directory over the last eleven years has been
its buyers guide which lists companies offering products and services in over
500 categories from antibodies and agricultural inoculants to yeasts and
xenobiotic degradation. Over the last two or three years certain sectors, notably
diagnostics and biopharmaceuticals, have rapidly expanded, whilst other
sectors have stayed still or even contracted. Next year we aim to extensively
revise the buyers guide to reflect these changes, by further sub-dividing
categories which have grown too large and merging some smaller
subcategories, where appropriate, to enhance usability.
This Herculean task has already been started; however, further suggestions for
new product categories would be gratefully received. We are, as always, keen
to hear ofa ny newtechnologies/products being developed by companies which
already have an entry, so please keep sending us your press releases and
company literature. In addition, if you are aware of any relevant companies or
organisations that are not listed in the directory please let us know. With over
10,000 entries, it is not always easy to keep track of all the developments that
are occurring in the industry all the time!
Finally the editors would like to thank Roger Coombs who has been responsible
for gathering, collating and entering much oft he new information added to this
edition of the directory. We hope you continue to find it a valuable source of
information and look forward to hearing from you during the year ahead
(remember any revisions to be included in the 1996 directory should reach us
no later than May 1995).
