There is a lot of literature about dying. Most of it is about dealing with the shocked aftermath of someone's death – first aid for survivors. There are many moving 
accounts – usually by widows – of how people recovered and 'came to terms' with the death of a loved one; these deaths usually came unexpectedly and the survivors 
found themselves stranded in a new and unfamiliar world. There are other books with titles like What to do . . . , Where to get help . . . , How to help bereaved 
people. . . .
We usually only begin to think and talk about death when a terminal disease is confirmed – leaving only a short time to face the reality, make arrangements and 
overcome inhibitions, anxieties and fears that have been established over a lifetime.
Mostly we know next to nothing about the facts of the physical process of death, what a funeral director does or what choices we have about burial or cremation: we 
pay handsomely for others to protect us from such 'unsavoury' details.
We almost consciously refuse to imagine what changes in our lives would follow the deaths of partners, friends, parents and children: we are taught that such thinking is 
morbid and unhealthy – there is even a feeling that just thinking about death may be sufficient to bring it about. We almost cultivate our ignorance and lack of 
preparation as though it is desirable that they should be added to our grief to sharpen it.
Underlying our refusal to come to grips with the subject is the lingering knowledge from infancy that we are special: life will get better and better. In the context of 
continual improvement, death is nonsense: an obscenity.
