Acknowledgments
It would be impossible for me to list all those who have
helped me with this book. Some do not know me and are
unaware of how much their books and articles have added
to my general understanding of imperialism. Among those
who have helped me personally I wish particularly to thank
Mr. Richard Krooth, who is himself writing a book about
imperialism—a far more fundamental and original work
than my own. I am grateful to him for the discussions and
correspondence we have had and for his generosity in al­
lowing me to read his manuscript and to make use of infor­
mation it contained. Mr. John Kelly, Dr. Hershel Meyer
and Mr. Adolph Silver have also given me valuable assist­
ance. They are all busy men but they were ready to put
aside time not only to read the manuscript as it progressed
but to discuss the many political questions the book raises.
I wish also to express my gratitude to the Monthly Review
of New York, a journal, alas, far more influential abroad
than it is in its own country. It would have been impossible
to have kept count of the number of times I referred to its
current and past issues while preparing this book. One need
not agree with all its conclusions (I do not) to appreciate
the very high standard of interpretation of events which it
provides and the extraordinary clarity with which it deals
with even the most complex problems. Mr. Harry Magdoff,
one of the editors of the Monthly Review, deserves the
thanks of all of us who are trying to understand the subject

The Age of Imperialism. As with the Monthly Review I
found Mr. MagdofFs book an invaluable source of informa­
tion and insight.
