PREFACE
The present book is my Leyden doctoral dissertation. At its various stages of com-
pletion the manuscript was read by Professor F. B. J. Kuiper, to whom the book owes
much. The task of translating the text from Dutch was entrusted to Mr. T. S. Preston.
Work on the book was made possible by a scholarship of the Dutch Ministry of
Education and Sciences, which also paid the costs of the translation. I am indebted to
Professor C.H. van Schooneveld for his permission to publish this study in the
series Janua Linguarum. Drs. J. P. Gumbert was so kind as to read the proofs and to
