earth.Theyoccurineveryfree-livingand
parasiticaquaticniche.Copepodshave
beenknownsincethetimeofAristotle,yet
therehasneverbeenahistoryofthestudy
ofcopepods.Thisvolume,thefirstina
plannedthree-volumeseries,reviewsthe
discoveriesofcopepodsto1832,theyear
thatthetwodistinctbranches—thefree-
livingcopepods(long-knownasinsects)
andtheparasiticcopepods(thought
tobemolluscsorworms),werefinally
acknowledgedasmembersofthesame
ClassCrustacea.Thenarrativeincludesthe
biographiesof90earlycopepodologists
andrecountstheirmostimportant
contributionstoscience.Portraitsare
includedfortwo-thirdsofthesubjects,
withsignificantnewmaterialaswellas
informationandillustrationsfromobscure
sources.
Milestonesincludethefirstdescription
ofcopepods(ca.350B.C.),thefirst
illustration(1554),thefirstfree-living
