This book deals with the theology of the Church of Smyrna from its foun-
dation up to the Council of Nicaea in 325. The author provides a critical

Preface
Early Christian Studies have suffered considerably from a tendency to regards
texts as culturally insulated from their social and intellectual environments in
Hellenistic culture. The witness of the early Fathers and Martyrologies, such as
those of Polycarp and of Pionius, and the surviving Ignatian and Polycarpian
texts, in combination with fragments in Irenaeus, has long been treated as a de-
velopment sui generis with little relationship to cultural background. Mauricio
Saavedra, in this ground breaking study arising from his work and collaboration
at the Augustinian Patristics Institute in Rome, has crucially challenged this fail-
ure of previous research.
Saavedra painstakingly reconstructs from earlier sources both the literary
Christian and Pagan background to Smyrna, and proceeds to integrate that liter-
ature within a comprehensive and perceptive picture of the general development
of Smyrna as a Hellenistic and then Roman city. His work, as a young scholar
of the highest promise, cannot be underestimated in its ability to lead us in new
directions in the study of Early Christian History.

My interest in the Church of Smyrna was first aroused following a suggestion
made by the man who is now Cardinal Prosper Grech, OSA, who some years ago
offered me his support and great academic experience in the study and explora-
tion in depth of a theme related to the rich cultural and religious world of Asia
Minor in the early centuries of Christianity. Thus it is that, after reading the book
by Paul Trebilco on the Christians of Ephesus up to the time of Ignatius, the idea
came to me of studying the history and theology of the Christian community of
Smyrna in depth, which acted as a sister and on occasion even rivaled of Ephesus
itself. To Cardinal Prosper Grech, I owe all the company provided throughout
this rigorous itinerary of research, and I wish to express to him in a special way
my gratitude for these years of academic and spiritual guidance.
This academic work has benefited inestimably from the opportune and sub-
stantial contributions of Professor Manlio Simonetti, who very generously de-
cided to put his vast academic experience in the field of the history and literature
of early Christianity at my disposal, and who with thoughtful diligence revised
all my notes, making adequate corrections and suggestions. My sincere gratitude

zivalli evinced her generous interest in helping me throughout this whole pro-
