David Shepherd was BIM Manager at the London office of HOK Architects, a global
practice of architects employing 16,000 people across 23 countries until 2015.
He is a fully trained BIM professional with 23 years’ working experience of writing,
presenting and implementing strategies for the design process automation of small
and large architectural practices. His professional experience ranges from working
as a qualified architectural technician in a major practice to CAD Manager, BIM
Consultant and BIM Manager. HOK is a world leader in BIM and BuildingSMART.
Chapter 7 was contributed by Professor David Mosey PhD, Director of the Centre of
Construction Law at King’s College London. Professor Mosey was the Government’s
project mentor on the Cookham Wood Trial Project, which explored the combination
of BIM Level 2 with early contractor involvement. He is author of Cabinet Office
guidance on ‘Two Stage Open Book and Supply Chain Collaboration’, which
illustrates how new procurement and contracting models can ensure that BIM
delivers savings and improved value. Professor Mosey was formerly Head of Projects
and Construction at Trowers & Hamlins solicitors, and won the 2009 Constructing
Excellence Achiever’s Award. He is author of the PPC2000 suite of partnering and
alliancing contracts.

digital services are making all our lives simpler, faster and more connected.
in most cases, this manifests itself into our everyday activities becoming more
efficient. this same paradigm is now beginning to be realised in the construction
sector where building information Modelling (biM) is helping our industry to be
more innovative, become more technologically advanced and create and care
for our built assets and infrastructure.
As we make this shift to better modelling and managing our project information,
it is important to give clear guidance to industry as to how they can mobilise or
accelerate their journey towards Level 2 biM maturity.
to some this journey can be daunting, transforming their ways of working and
transactions from siloed and analogue to collaborative and digital. however,
when properly unpacked the biM process is axiomatic, allowing benefits to
be unlocked at all stages of the asset life-cycle by both the client and the
supply chain. this transformation is not simply about digital re-tooling, but
also re-engineering processes, and most importantly building a framework of
unified and collaborative working.
this handbook is an ideal guide to help anyone understand how biM can help
their business or project and practically create and implement a strategy for biM.
