Paul Coelestin Ettighoffers Bericht über die Schlacht von Tannenberg, ebenso spannend und erschütternd wie sein berühmtestes Buch "Verdun", liegt hier erstmals in einer digitalisierten Ausgabe im EPUB-Format vor. Dies ist an sich schon bemerkenswert, da die Originalausgabe in Frakturschrift gesetzt wurde, deren Transformation in eine lesbare Antiqua-Schrift naturgemäß schwierig war. Ebenso bemerkenswert ist, dass diese EPUB-Publikation die erste Wiederveröffentlichung nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg ist. Ettighoffers Kriegsbücher, darunter "Verdun" und "Sturm 1918", galten als ebenbürtige national-konservative Antwort auf Remarques Bestseller "Im Westen nichts Neues". Im Unterschied zu Remarque würdigt Ettighoffer jedoch nicht nur das Elend und die Grausamkeit des Krieges sondern gleichermaßen auch Heldentum und Opferbereitschaft der Kombattanten - unabhängig von ihrer Nationalität - auf eine möglichst objektive Weise. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde "Tannenberg" - wie auch die anderen Bücher Ettighoffers - in der sowjetischen Besatzungszone und später in der DDR verboten. Es ist naheliegend, dass die Russen kein Interesse daran hatten, die Erinnerung an eine größten Niederlagen in der Geschichte ihres Landes wiederzubeleben. Anders als Ettighoffers Buch "Verdun", das in der Bundesrepublik noch mehrere Neuauflagen erlebte, wurden "Tannenberg" und "Sturm 1918" aber auch dort nicht mehr neu verlegt.
