Introduction
This book covers the selected works of scholars from a variety of distinguished
universities and institutions in Turkey. It centers on and around the most recent
and challenging issues related to translation studies with a highly wide scope
ranging from the ecological translation to the challenges of subtitling, and from
the translation of ancient Sutras to the use of technological tools as an innovative
approach in the field. The book aims to represent the rich and colorful variety
of subjects appealing to the experts and researchers of the field with specialized
touches upon different aspects of translation studies.
Bringing extensive and intensive analysis together to contribute to the rele-
vant field of the studies and offering a wide perspective, the book is designed
as the second book of the circle under the title of Synergy along with the ones
related to literature and linguistics.
In the first chapter, N. Berrin Aksoy sheds light on Nazım Hikmet’s poem
‘Salkımsöğüt’, a perfect reflection of nature and the natural, and its translation
‘Weeping Willow’ by Bernard Lewis focusing on the theme of ecological trans-
lation of poetry. The second chapter has A. Şirin Okyayuz’s article in which she
presents a perspective on the challenges and constraints of subtitling while, at
the same time, offering and exemplifying innovative approaches made avail-
able through practitioners’ good practices and advances in technology. Hilal
Erkazancı-D urmuş, in the third chapter, investigates the utilization of Ottoman
translation practices by writer- translators of the late 19th century in the con-
struction and dissemination of national images and stereotypes with a touch
upon the translational transfer to transform women’s gender roles in Ottoman
society. The fourth chapter by Sinem Sancaktaroğlu- Bozkurt explores the unique
situation of retranslation of parts of the cities in Turkey, especially in Ankara
and Istanbul, where political and cultural tensions have been experienced during
critical turning points throughout history with reference to Simon’s concept of
cities and translation. Ebru Ak, in the fifth chapter, explores the concepts of
transnationality, travel theory, identity politics, hybridity, and in- betweenness
while flashing upon feminist translation on the eastern and western axis. In the
sixth chapter, Selen Tekalp analyses Bit Palas (Flea Palace), the first translated
novel of Elif Shafak, within the framework of the various strategies applied in
the translation of archaic and colloquial expressions indicating Shafak’s distinc-
tive way of choosing words to use a ‘heterogeneous language’. Betül Özcan-D ost,
in the seventh chapter, studies the translations of five selected English nursery

rhymes into Turkish and Spanish by focusing on how the translator is expected
to transfer the form, meaning, and feeling of the source text while also creating
an appropriate target text which is supposed to be singable and catchy for kids.
The eighth chapter by Adem Akalın delves into a comparative analysis of the
methods utilized by the translators of Sutras to reveal the characteristics of
ancient translation methods in China and Tibet. The ninth chapter has T. Elif
Taşdan- Doğan’s study on the use of technological systems and programs in the
evaluation of the quality of translated texts, and since it is a relatively new plat-
form, the study gives information about the characteristics of ‘Voyant- Tools’ with
its benefits and limitations exemplified with Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
and its three Turkish translations on a comparative basis. Göksel Öztürk, in the
tenth chapter, aims to investigate the first translations of comics in Turkey, which
coincides with the Early Republican Era, in terms of censorship and manipu-
lation. The eleventh chapter by Büşra Özer- Erdoğan dwells on the challenges
encountered in translating legal language with special reference to the translated
Turkey judgments of the European Court of Human Rights (‘EctHR’) while also
making suggestions about how to overcome them. In the twelfth chapter, Ayşe
Saki- Demirel aims to reveal what translated works Güldünya Yayınları, the only
feminist publishing house currently operating in Turkey, has published since its
establishment, and then, to explore how it instrumentalizes translation and what
ideological and political motivations lie behind the production and publication
of these translations. Cihan Alan, in the thirteenth chapter, centers on the his-
torical development of the queer movement in Turkey from the perspective of
translation studies.
