The Blue Ridge Haze
O
n October 25, 2013 Assistant Professor of Environmental
Science Dr. Tom O’Halloran gave a lecture entitled
“The Science and Beauty of the Blue Ridge Haze” to
the Friends of the Library. In his lecture, Dr. O’Halloran
explained that the iconic haze, so familiar in the mountains
surrounding SBC, is formed of very tiny particles suspended in the
air, called aerosols, which scatter blue light because of their tiny
size. The particles form when gasses emitted by the trees react in
the atmosphere to condense and form the tiny aerosols. Some of
the gasses emitted by the trees are familiar as the compounds that
give pine trees their characteristic smell. The most globally-abundant
species emitted by plants, isoprene, is emitted very strongly by oak
trees, which dominate the forests around Sweet Briar. For this reason,
SBC is ideally located for research into the formation of the haze.
Scientists are studying these naturally-emitted compounds and how
they interact with air pollution to form the hazes common to the
southeastern United States in summer. Scientists hypothesize that
these hazes could be affecting regional climate by blocking sunlight
and cooling the surface. The aerosols may also affect precipitation in
the region. Dr. O’Halloran’s previous research as a doctoral student
at the University of Virginia has shown that the formation of new
aerosols in the region is common due to the ideal blend of natural
tree emissions and air pollution in the region.
O’Halloran recently received a $100,000 grant from the Jeffress
Trust Awards Program in Interdisciplinary Research to continue
his work on aerosol formation in the region. Along with funds
that the Department of Environmental Science received from the
Cargill Foundation, O’Halloran plans to establish a state-of-the-art
air quality research station on campus at Sweet Briar. The research
station will provide many research opportunities for undergraduate
research. For example, funds from the Jeffress Trust will support
a summer undergraduate researcher in summer 2014 to assist
O’Halloran in initial deployment of the instrumentation. He expects
that the site will attract regional and national scientific collaborators
who are interested in similar research.
