Sustainable Development Goals Series
World leaders adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of the
2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Providing in-depth knowledge,
this series fosters comprehensive research on these global targets to end
poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and tackle climate change.
The sustainability of our planet is currently a major concern for the global
community and has been a central theme for a number of major global
initiatives in recent years. Perceiving a dire need for concrete benchmarks
toward sustainable development, the United Nations and world leaders
formulated the targets that make up the seventeen goals. The SDGs call for
action by all countries to promote prosperity while protecting Earth and its
life support systems. This series on the Sustainable Development Goals aims
to provide a comprehensive platform for scientific, teaching and research
communities working on various global issues in the field of geography, earth
sciences, environmental science, social sciences, engineering, policy, planning,
and human geosciences in order to contribute knowledge towards achieving
the current 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
This Series is organized into eighteen subseries: one based around each of
the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals, and an eighteenth subseries,
“Connecting the Goals,” which serves as a home for volumes addressing
multiple goals or studying the SDGs as a whole. Each subseries is guided by an
expert Subseries Advisor.
Contributions are welcome from scientists, policy makers and researchers

Preface
This book is part of the Sustainable Development Goals for Society book
series, which comes in two volumes. This particular volume (Volume I) pres-
ents selected topics of global relevance. The volume comes in 5 major parts
and 19 chapters. The five parts are, namely, (1) Introduction and Background,
(2) Addressing Poverty in the Context of SDGs, (3) Leadership in
Implementing SDGs, (4) SDGs in Service Delivery and Local Government
and (5) Conclusion and Recommendations. The history of the Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs) dates back to the United Nations Conference on
Sustainable Development (Rio+20) held in 2012 in Rio de Janeiro. The need
for a post-2015 Agenda was highlighted in the Rio+20 outcome document
‘The Future We Want’. From the Rio+20 Conference, the United Nations
General Assembly reaffirmed the desire to continue mainstreaming sustain-
able development at all levels. Such an approach had to consider the integra-
tion of the three main pillars of sustainable development including economic,
social and environmental aspects. However, people were to be at the centre of
such development. Therefore, the commitment to accelerate the achievement
of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) was made. The MDGs imple-
mentation process, therefore, remains the foundation for implementing the
SDGs. Designed along with a similar architecture to the MDGs, the SDGs
seek to complete what the MDGs could not attain based on a balance of the
three dimensions of sustainable development at a much more enhanced and
ambitious level. The 17 SDGs as embedded into the 2030 Agenda for
Sustainable Development are universal, more inclusive and they include a
well-defined means of implementation. The SDGs are interlinked and sup-
ported by 169 targets. Through the SDGs, the world should involve every citi-
zen and organisation, hence the motto ‘Let no one be left behind’. This
volume presents selected case studies that are of global importance, with cer-
tain implementation lessons that can be drawn from Africa, Europe and Latin
America.

of our work. The book project was coordinated through the Exxaro Chair in
Business and Climate Change, a research chair that is funded by the Exxaro
Resources (Pty) Ltd Chairman’s Fund and hosted by the Institute for
Corporate Citizenship at the University of South Africa. The Exxaro Chair
was established in 2008 and is currently in its fourth term ending in 2022.
This book is double-blind peer reviewed. Apart from this being the inter-
national best practice norm, this double-blind peer review process is manda-
tory for South Africa-based authors to fulfil the requirements of the
Department of Higher Education and Training’s (DHET) policy for recog-
nised research outputs for subsidy purposes. The authors invested their time
to incorporate observations from the blind peer review process, an aspect that
enhanced the quality of the product.
