Department Annual Report (outline)

accomplishments.

DEPARTMENT ANNUAL REPORT – EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

ANTHROPOLOGY PROGRAM SUMMARY
Unit Goals:
The anthropology program is 100% successful in meeting its unit goals.
Enrollment and Retention Goals:
The anthropology program is 100% successful in meeting its proposed 1-year enrollment and
retention goals.
Program Viability:
The anthropology program is rebounding after a period of decline. The program posted a -23%
decline in 2016-2017, but is slowly increasing its majors and meeting its current yearly
enrollment goals. The maintenance of these goals in light of the overall university decline, plus
positive indicators such as growth in majors and its strong success in graduating majors indicates
that it is a viable program.

Considering that the program has only 4 full-time faculty and one continuing lecturer, it
continues to be very productive in terms of scholarly and creative output, producing peer-
reviewed scholarly publications, as well as informative reports for government, industry and the
local community.
2. Teaching and Learning
The faculty involve about 1/3 (12/35) of majors in directed research, and take an active role in
supporting student activities such as the Anthropology Club lecture series. The faculty support
university-wide leaning initiatives such as the Student Research and Creative Endeavor Symposium,
the College of Arts and Sciences Sixth Annual Symposium on Teaching and Learning. One faculty
member provided a study abroad opportunity for 8 students in Scotland. Another faculty member and
supported the Nursing program by offering a course on transcultural nursing, and provided service
learning opportunities for 7 other students as part of the Fort Wayne Healthy Cities Fair.

3. Service
The anthropology faculty are very active in serving their discipline, community and nation. The
faculty serve on 7 boards for seven different professional societies and are active in reviewing
manuscripts and dissertations. The faculty serve the NE Indiana community through the Fort
Wayne Healthy Cities Fair, and numerous (21) public lectures and publications. One faculty
member has figured prominently in interviews concerning terrorism and other national security
threats in the Journal Gazette and on local radio. Finally, one faculty member delivered eight
briefings to the Joint Staff, Special Operations Command and U.S. Army Special Forces
Command on terrorist threats, nuclear proliferation in North Korea, Russian information
operations and Chinese operations in the South China Sea.
ANTHROPOLOGY PROGRAM – RESEARCH CERTIFICATE SUMMARY
Program Viability:
Since this is a certificate available to anthropology majors, it has no specific unit goals. The
program is currently meeting most of its enrollment goals, although we would like to see a few
more students participating. The program also has no cost and so should be considered viable.
NATIVE AMERICAN STUDIES CERTIFICATE SUMMARY
Program Viability:
This program is no longer viable. It historically relied on particular anthropology faculty and
faculty in the departments of history, English and linguistics and fine arts who have left the
university, retired or died. No replacements have been made and therefore the curriculum upon
which the program depended no longer is taught. I recommend discontinuing this program.

indicators such as its strong success in graduating majors indicates that it is a viable program.

2. Teaching and Learning
The sociology program engages many of its majors in learning opportunities outside of the
classroom, which leads to greater student engagement and retention. It is one of the stronger
aspects of the program. The Center for Social Research (CSR) employed 35 students engaged in
research at one time or another through the year. Additionally, faulty guided 15 students in
directed research and engagement and service learning opportunities in the community. One
faculty member provided a study abroad in Japan opportunity for three students.
3. Service
The sociology faculty are very active in serving their discipline, community and industry. The
faculty are involved in professional societies and are active in reviewing manuscripts. The
faculty serve the NE Indiana community through activities of the Center for Social Research
(CSR) and through environmental sociological research with the Blackford County Concerned
Citizens, Hoosier Environmental Council.
