Introduction
This proposed guide contains a set of exercises, ideas and activities that will help you to
master social competence and creativity skills.
What does the guide contain and how do you use it?
The guide is divided into sections;broken down into social competence and creativity
skills. Each section includes a description of exercises and activities,which will help you
master the presented content. The process to be undertaken is represented by the following
statement: “Observing the social competence and creativity in others, then in yourself,then
practicing the social competence and creativity in /didactic and playful context/and
redirecting it into an actual context”/ Hatchings, Comins, & Offiler,208 /.
Sequences
Stage 1 - Observing models of social competence and creativity, demonstrated by
others.
Stage 2 - Observing self- social competence and creativity /discovery and experience of
self- social competence and creativity /.
Stage 3- Practising social competence and creativity in didactic and playful and safe
context.
Stage 4 - Using the mastered social competence in everyday life.
An essential point in the program for developing social competence and creativity is
the creation of opportunities to practise skills in situations that are close to real situations,
which would reinforce the belief that learning can be applied in real situations and become
part of personal experience.
Certainly, for you as tutors, it will not be possible to provide real context. But you can
use a variety of scenarios which are similar to real situations, to aid the transfer of the learned
social competence skills from didactic to real situations.
This process can be facilitated by the introduction of a variety of scenarios and users.
What will ensure you success is your ability to encourage participants to continue to put the
learned skills into practice in real life situations, which are filled with real challenges.
Take a note of the following consequence:
What should be learned?
Participants in the group would be able to cope with learning much more easily if they
understand the purpose and meaning of what they have to learn and how to learn it.
7
Providing support
Participants in the group will be more prone to continue learning, and feel much more
confident if they receive regular positive feedback.
Encouraging the learning
Participants in the group will be more prone to continue learning, if they have confidence
that the skills they are learning increases to some extent their competence and confidence
that they can do it.
Possibilities for practising
Participants in the group will be more prone to continue learning, if they have experiences
in real situations similar or relevant to the educational ones. The process of implementing
the learned skills in a real context is part of the program and it depends of your ability to
encourage the participants to apply the skills, which they’ve learned in their own lives.
This guide is designed for working in a small group. Participation is voluntarily,
participants are open for change, keen, and willing to discuss professional and personal
challenges. Group work passes in the context of dialogical relations, in the situation „here
and now“. The use of the current situation as a source of experiences and discussion topics
provides:
y emotional and behavioural engagement
y general significance that goes beyond the previous experiences of the individual
y participants;
y opportunity for the behaviour to be modified, to experiment, to fix the mistakes,
to narrate, to share, to seek solutions and meanings jointly, and the freedom to
experiment with the someone’s own self-behaviour, to seek, to rethink is the basis
of learning.
y opportunity to rethink someone’s own experiences, attitudes, behaviours, and to
rethink the behaviour towards yourself
Teamwork implies:
• area of security and mutual trust;
• non- assessment -that provides an authentic presence and free expression of
experiences;
• concreteness - sharing include specific feelings and behaviours;
• activity and initiative, combined with the experience of self-value and importance
of each participant;
8
• unconditional acceptance of others;
• responsibility;
• Inviolability -collaborative searches should not affect the participants‘ self-esteem
and experiences;
• freedom of expression;
• support and experience of support - participants can receive support in coping with
difficulties;
• Structured situations - exercises, activities, scenarios ... which are performed by a
facilitator.
Notes
In describing the activities and exercises in the particular sections many of the ideas
and exercises created by D. Jonson, S. Khlsa, A. Vernon, B. Berg, T. Gordon, K. Mcgonigal, M.
Rosenberg, S. Hutchings, J. Comins, and J. Offiler, M. McKay, M. Davis, & P. Fanning are used.
