Recueilli amnésique après une bataille il est pris pour un soldat allemand et rééduqué comme tel. Mais si la couleur de son caleçon a changé qu’en est-il de l’homme ? L’écrivain devenu juriste se « plagie » tant qu’en janvier 1922, un ami de Forestier s'interroge et part à Berlin. Avec l’aide du baron Zelten, il reconnaît Forestier en Siegfried et fait tout pour lui faire retrouver la mémoire. Mais que reste-t-il de cette Allemagne qu’a connu cet ami avant la guerre quand il était un jeune boursier ? La revanche est-elle devenue la seule motivation de ses ex-amis allemands ? « Cette idée [d’une substitution] était si dramatique que, comme tous les grands drames, elle a été réalisée depuis par le sort. Je tiens en ce qui concerne ce sujet, à bien affirmer mon droit de priorité vis-à-vis de la Providence […] J'avais à parler de l'Allemagne, et le mégaphone lui-même n'est pas assez sonore dans ce cas ». Giraudoux cherche en effet, à démontrer à travers Siegfried, dans une période où beaucoup songent à la revanche, l’absence de raison déterminante aux haines et aux guerres entre la France et l’Allemagne , comme entre tout autre pays. Ce roman au style imagé est plein de digressions, d’associations et de références, parfois ironique, improbable, surréaliste mais aussi profond. Couronné du prix Balzac, ce roman fit le succès de Jean Giraudoux. Adapté pour le théâtre, Siegfried, fut créé en 1928 avec Louis Jouvet. Aujourd’hui la pièce a supplanté le roman un peu tombé dans l’oubli. 1922
