IN MEMORY OF PROFESSOR DAN BAR-ON
Professor Dan Bar-On devoted many years to the study of the Israeli-
Palestinian conflict, with a sincere commitment to know the “other” and to
look at the reflection of the “other” within us. This book is one of the sig-
nificant products of his groundbreaking work with colleague Professor Sami
Adwan, expressing an innovative conception of the meaning of history and its
place in the development of conflicts and their reconciliation.
To the very end, Dan never wavered in his concern for the progress and
completion of the project he had created with Sami, entitled “Learning Each
Other’s Historical Narratives.” While building a unique and warm partner-
ship, Dan and Sami brought together Palestinian and Israeli teachers to write
this dual-narrative history book.
To our great regret, Dan did not live to see this publication. A noble man of
many dimensions, Dan was an inspiration to everyone working on the project,
enabling them to persevere and learn together throughout the delicate process.
We greatly admired his ability to embrace differences between the perspectives
of the conflict and to see how the acknowledgment of differences makes dia-
logue possible and creates a basis for reexamining the different narratives as well
as the substance of the conflict, in preparation for future reconciliation.

Dan and Sami were able to construct the project to become personally
meaningful to everyone involved. We were greatly influenced by Dan's spe-
cial charisma, his dedication and insight, and his extraordinary capacity to
change without losing the self, to learn new “languages” and move between
them, while working tirelessly to “translate” the “other.”
Dan touched each one of us and became a fundamental part of our
professional journeys and our individual life stories. We were greatly honored
and privileged to have worked with him and to have shared his vision inte-
grating greater closeness, understanding, differentness sensitivity, and self-
examination.
Dan will be greatly missed by all of us.
