Olga Antononoka is a researcher affiliated with the School of
International Studies, Kwansei Gakuin University, Japan. She holds an
M.A. in Japanese Studies from the University of Latvia and an M.A. and
Ph.D. in Manga Studies from Kyoto Seika University, Japan. Her M.A.
project, “Bishōnen in Boys’ Love Manga: Transcending the Phallus,”
addressed the performative androgyny of the boys’ love protagonist.
Her Ph.D. project, “Manga-drag: Female Address, Male Cross-Dressing
Character, and Media Performativity,” focused on performance, gender,
and manga as a performative medium through analysis of representation
of kabuki theater in manga.
Sonoko Azuma completed her Ph.D. in Sociology at Osaka University,
Japan in 2010. She is now an Associate Professor in the Faculty of
Sociology at Kyoto Sangyo University, Japan. Her main research fields
are sociology and gender studies. She studies Takarazuka Revue, BL
fan fiction, Japanese girls’ culture, and the Japanese gangster (yakuza)
movie. Azuma is author of Takarazuka/Yaoi, ai no yomikae: josei to
popyurā karuchā no shakaigaku [Takarazuka, Yaoi, and the Replacement
of Love: A Sociology of Women and Popular Culture], (2015). She has also
authored journal articles on amateur writings derived from popular cul-
ture materials and on the role of mass media and popular media in con-
temporary society.
Jaqueline Berndt is a Professor of Japanese Language and Culture
at Stockholm University, Sweden. Holding a first degree in Japanese
