Notes on Contributors
Ian Bent is Emeritus Professor of Music at Columbia University, New York. He
has worked widely in the history of music theory and analysis. His books include
Analysis (1987, with William Drabkin), and Music Analysis in the Nineteenth
Century (1994). He has published articles in the field of Schenker studies, and was
initiator of Schenker Documents Online.
David Bretherton is Lecturer in Music at the University of Southampton, having
previously served as a postdoctoral research assistant for Schenker Documents
Online. He has published articles and delivered conference papers on Schubert’s
songs, Schenker, and digital musicology. His doctoral thesis, on “The Poetics of
Schubert’s Song-Forms” (Oxford 2008), was supervised by Suzannah Clark.
Marko Deisinger teaches at the Department of Analysis, Theory and History
of Music, at the University for Music and Performing Arts, Vienna. His doctoral
dissertation was on the Viennese court Kapellmeister Giuseppe Tricarico, and
he has since conducted research on music-historical relationships between Italy
and the Habsburg court in Vienna in the seventeenth century. He transcribed
Schenker’s diaries 1918–30 for Schenker Documents Online.
William Drabkin, Emeritus Professor of Music at the University of Southampton,
is Editor of Music Analysis, and also of the translations of Der Tonwille and The
Masterwork in Music. He has written biographical studies of Schenker and his
circle based on material in the Schenker archives, and has translated much of
Schenker’s diary and correspondence for Schenker Documents Online. He has also
published an edition of Beethoven’s principal sketchbook from 1821 (Artaria 197).
Martin Eybl is Professor of Music History at the University for Music and
Performing Arts, Vienna. His research is focused on aesthetics and music theory
in the early twentieth century, editions of early music, and Austrian music of the
eighteenth century. From 1994 to 2006 he was director of the Schenkerian analysis
program at the University.
Christoph Hust is Professor of Musicology at the University for Music and
Theater in Leipzig. His books deal with seventeenth-, eighteenth-, and twentieth-
century music and music theory, and he has produced editions of eighteenth-
century texts about music (Nichelmann, Koch, Burney). His interests lie in
methodological approaches to music theory and analysis.
Kevin C. Karnes is Professor of Music at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia,
USA. His books include Jewish Folk Songs from the Baltics: Selections from the
Melngailis Collection (2014), A Kingdom Not of This World: Wagner, the Arts, and
Utopian Visions in Fin-de-Siècle Vienna (2013), and, with Walter Frisch, the revised
edition of Brahms and His World (2009).
