Patholoog-anatoom Kay Scarpetta en haar vriend forensisch psycholoog Benton Wesley zijn inmiddels getrouwd, ze onderzoeken de moord op de kleine vrouw (een dwerg) Terri Bridges. Is ze vermoord door haar even kleine vriend Oscar? Oscar zelf, gewond en op eigen verzoek opgenomen op de forensisch psychiatrische afdeling van ziekenhuis Bellevue in Manhattan, beweert dat hij zelf ook slachtoffer is en dat er meer moorden zullen volgen. Griezelig is dat de moordenaar altijd precies weet waar zijn slachtoffer zich bevindt. Bij het onderzoek dat zich evenzeer in de straten van New York als op het web afspeelt, helpt Scarpetta's nichtje Lucy, die nu een eigen forensische computeronderzoeksbureau heeft, mee. Ook Scarpetta's vroegere side-kick detective Pete Marino, met wie ze in het vorige deel 'Dodenrol' een vreemde aanvaring had, is weer in beeld. Goed geschreven forensische thriller vol technische onderzoeksdetails en onverwachte wendingen, intrigerend en zeer spannend tot het eind. Cornwell behoort tot de top van de Amerikaanse thrillerauteurs, haar werk werd vele malen bekroond.
