PREFACE
PREFACE 

The Institute of Optics and Quantum Electronics (IOQ) belongs to the Department of Physics 
and Astronomy (Physikalisch‐Astronomische Fakultät, PAF) of Friedrich Schiller University in 
Jena. The mission of the institute is research in laser physics and optics as well as teaching 
undergraduate and graduate courses.  

The current emphasis in research is the investigation of the interaction of extremely intense 
laser radiation with matter. The laser intensities covered extend over more than seven orders 
of  magnitude  from  extremely  non‐perturbative  to  relativistic  strong‐field  laser  physics. 
Accordingly, the institute is home of several high‐power lasers that range from few‐cycle laser 
pulses at kilohertz repetition rates to 100‐TW pulses. Unique is the Polaris laser system, the 
worldwide first all‐diode‐pumped solid‐state PW‐class femtosecond laser. 

Characteristic projects are the generation, investigation, and application of XUV and soft‐X‐ray 
radiation,  the  acceleration  of  electrons  and  ions,  and  strong‐field  QED  and  ionization 
dynamics. Three professorships cover these research areas, each concentrating at different 
aspects, but all in close collaboration. In addition, the institute has a unique competence in X‐
ray optics and spectroscopy as well as in high‐power laser development. 

The  Institute  of  Optics  and  Quantum  Electronics  is  active  in  a  number  of  national  and 
international networks. In Jena these are the university centers Abbe Center of Photonics and 
the Center of Medical Optics and Photonics. A formative role has played the Collaborative 
Research Center SFB/TR‐18 funded by the German Science Foundation. This center ties the 
institute's research activities in relativistic laser plasma physics. On the European level, the 
institute is a member of LaserLab Europe and contributes to the large‐scale projects Extreme 
Light Infrastructure (ELI) and High Power Laser Energy Research (HiPER). Finally, the institute 
works closely together with the Helmholtz Institute Jena dedicated to research at the interface 
of  high‐power  lasers  and  radio‐frequency  accelerators.  The  Helmholtz  Institute  Jena  has 
expanded the collaboration with GSI (Darmstadt) and DESY (Hamburg), where IOQ is involved 
in, e.g., laser‐acceleration of ions, X‐ray lasers, and studies at the free‐electron laser FLASH. 

Besides our activities in fundamental and applied research, the institute plays an important 
role for the departments teaching activities. Courses offered by the institute's faculty cover the 
entire range of undergraduate and graduate courses. Most of our graduate courses are taught 
in English and service also the department's International Masters in Photonics in the 
framework of the Abbe School of Photonics. In addition, the scientific staff of the institute and 
the research assistants offer recitations and lab courses.
