Northern Virginia withdrew southward,
deploying that autumn in two separate
wingsnearWinchesterandCulpeper. In
November the new commander ofthe
Union'sArmyofthePotomac, Ambrose
Burnside,conceivedaplantoshifthis
forceseastfromWarrenton, seizeFreder-
icksburg and descend on a direct route
south to capture Richmond. Anticipating
J theFederal move, Leeconsolidated his
forcesinablockingpositiononthesouth
bank ofthe Rappahannock, setting the
stage for savage battles at Fredericksburg
andnearbyChancellorsville.
