Chapter 1: School Community Profile & Data

Doha Modern Indian School (DMIS) is an international school that follows an educational
program based on the National curriculum and International curriculum (CBSE-i) as part of a
pilot project by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), in 2010. It was established
in April 2005 and is located in (Abu Hamour). Today, it is one of the three schools under the
Taleb banner that is striding ahead and its endeavor to create global citizens. The school serves
students from kindergarten to grade 12. It started with the vision of preparing students to face
challenges of the 21st century. With an emphasis on adherence to excellence, ethics and values,
the school has, at the very outset instilled the need for forward thinking.

The school prepares students for the All India Senior School Certificate Examinations (Grade
12). The curriculum is designed to keep pace with the latest educational trends and techniques
and offers a wide variety of practical application avenues that makes it both challenging and
rewarding.

DMIS aims to provide a balanced, varied school curriculum designed to meet the academic,
cultural, and social needs of individuals from diverse backgrounds. It is committed to create
learners who will develop their individual talents, critical thinking, and technology skills by
being actively engaged in the learning process.

Members of the school’s board are Chairman Mr. Mohammed Taleb AL-Khouri and the
director of the schools, Mr. Jayashankar Pillai. The quality control of the education system at
DMIS rests with the Academic Auditor who is part of the Senior Management team.
Kindergarten follows a curriculum where the child is initiated into schooling through fun –
filled activities and child – oriented methods of learning. Activities that encourage basic
cognitive and motor skills, along with basic lessons in literacy, numerals, phonics and well
graded writing patterns follow a comprehensive foundation building program. Emphasis is laid
on education through exploration and experimentation. English, Mathematics, General

Knowledge, Art & Craft, Physical Education, Music and Yoga are the courses offered in
Kindergarten.

The curriculum in Primary School lays emphasis on concept formation and reasoning skills.
Problem solving and creative thinking along with acquiring sound language skills and
developing scientific temperament are all focused upon. Students learn English, Math, Science /
EVS, Social Studies, Second language (Arabic, French, Hindi, Malayalam and Tamil), Art &
Craft, Music, Dance, PE and Computer Science in grades 1 to 5.

The courses offered in Middle School (grades 6 to 8) are English, Math, Science, Social
Studies, Second language (Arabic, French, Hindi, Malayalam and Tamil), Third language
(Arabic, French, Hindi and Malayalam), Art &Craft, Music, Dance, PE and Computer Science,
to be curious and analytical and are prepared to accept additional challenges. Islamic studies /
Moral education is compulsory for grades 1 to 8.

The Secondary School (grades 9 &10) curriculum includes English, Math, Science, Social
Studies, Second language (Arabic, French, Hindi, Malayalam and Tamil), PE and Health
Education/ Art Education / Work Education and Information Technology.

The Senior School has both the Science Stream and the Commerce Stream. English, Math,
Physics, Chemistry and Biology / Informatics Practices / Computer Science are the subjects
offered to the science students. English, Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics,
Mathematics / Computer Science / Informatics Practices are offered to the Commerce students.
The students are prepared for the Senior School Certificate Examination under 10+2 pattern of
the Central Board of Secondary Education, Delhi. The school conducts C.B.S.E Examination at
Grade 10 and Grade 12, students appear for the CBSE Grade 12 examination conducted by the
CBSE. This examination is accepted by all Indian Universities as a Qualifying examination for
their three-year Under Graduate Courses.

CBSE-International (CBSEi) has formulated an internationally benchmarked global
curriculum which is enquiry and skill based. It addresses global needs as well as relates to local
issues and local culture. It aims to build learners with critical and creative thinking skills,
interpersonal and communication skills along with strong physical and emotional health. There
are five areas – Languages, Social Studies, Science, Mathematics and a combination of PE,
Performing Arts and Visual Arts. At the heart of the curriculum are innovative programs called
Perspectives, Life Skills, SEWA (Social Empowerment through Work and Action) and
Research.

The Academic Year is divided into two terms-1st Term (April to September) and 2nd Term
(October to March). These are interspersed with summer (July- August) and winter holidays
(December). The school conducts two formal examinations, once each term. In between the two
examinations, class tests and unit tests are conducted at regular intervals for a continuous
academic monitoring and assessment of the student. For promotion to the next class,
performance of the student in all Unit tests and exams during the academic year contributes to
his final assessment.
Classroom Aspects
At Doha Modern Indian School, classroom display boards are effective means of teaching. The
visually appealing and intellectually stimulating display boards creatively display the work of
the students and support student learning. As such, DMIS teachers are responsible for creating
a supportive learning environment through:
 Explicit instruction is used to introduce new language with individual and choral responses
from the children.
 Guided and independent practice is used so that children have the opportunity to review and
apply the knowledge and skills that have already been introduced to them.
 Small group instruction, where children work in small groups for extended learning
opportunities, scaffolding activities and differentiation.

 Inquiry, wherein students experience and acquire processes through which they can gather
information about the world.
 Technology integration, where children use adaptive learning software to meet their individual
learning needs and assess their progress.
 Specialized language acquisition strategies, where teachers use a range of skills to ensure
material is accessible such as: body language, hand gestures, visual and audio aids, real life
props, context, clear enunciation, a range of questioning techniques.
 Problem Solving, where students learn how to find the best possible solution as opposed to the
easiest solution or the first solution proposed.
 Experiential learning, which is inductive, learner centered, and activity oriented, and followed
by reflection by the learner about an experience and the formulation of plans to apply learning
to other contexts.
School Extracurricular Activities
The school curriculum keeps in mind the capabilities of each student, thus has been designed in
a way that the school activities help students learn and practice skills that help them express
their individuality. Apart from enhancing the skills of a student the school offers extensive
playfields for physical growth. The co-curricular activities bring out the creativity, curiosity and
the power of imagination in the child. Arts, Dance, Drama, Physical Education, Music, ICT, are
taken up once or twice a week depending on the Grade levels. The school also conducts Annual
Events.
Personality Development of Students
In order to foster the development of the psychosocial development of its students, DMIS
Annual Events- like Annual Day, Annual Exhibition, Annual Sports Day, Skill -o-Panorama,
Investiture Ceremony, Kindergarten Graduation Day and Leadership Camp. Celebration of
International occurrences like Environment Day, Children’s Day, Mother’s Day, Teachers’ Day
and other important national days of India and Qatar. Special Assemblies are conducted on
these days. Activities like Color Days, Show-n-Tell, Elocution, Recitation, Essay Writing, are a
regular feature in Doha Modern Indian School. The Day Boarding system makes the school

unique in character. The system incorporates academics followed by lunch, and an Afternoon
Self – Improvement Program (ASIP) that includes a supervised study-session and extra-
curricular activities. For lunch, table etiquette is inculcated as the Principal and the teaching
faculty dines with the students. These activities bring out the creativity, curiosity and the power
of imagination in the child. The students are also exposed to a variety of activities like Art and
Craft, Cyberspace, Athletics, Instrumental Music, Public speaking and Journalism, Quiz, Yoga
and Performing/Visual Arts. In addition to sport and games including badminton, basketball,
cricket, football, swimming, table tennis/tennis and indoor games . The students are free to
choose their area of interest. Scouting and Guiding also receive great importance at DMIS with
the specific view of developing character, values, health, strength, handicraft skill, and service
to others.
School Code of Conduct:
The staff use positive relationships and encourage good behaviour through effective positive
discipline techniques in the classrooms and the school. This is further enhanced by the school
House System and the Award System. The school also has a Guidance and Counseling
department, which plays a vital role in handling behavioural issues effectively. The school has a
discipline policy which may be used in consultation with the SEC.
School’s aspects:
The school states that with facilities that support excellence in all areas, Doha Modern Indian
School is among the best-equipped schools in Qatar. The infrastructure has been suitably
planned to accommodate learning, leadership development and a balanced curriculum. Spread
across a sprawling 25,000 sq.m campus, Doha Modern Indian School has a welcoming and
spacious lobby, and smart classrooms that are fully air conditioned and equipped with the latest
technological gadgets that enhance and aid learning. The academic facilities include a state-of-
the-art resource center, a digital studio, well equipped modern ICT laboratories with computers
that are online permanently, separate laboratories for Physics, Chemistry and Biology, a well-
stocked library, Art Studio and Audio Visual room. The school is also equipped with projectors
and computer facilities for all students. Digital Campus is a large database system which is

being used for managing the school’s day to day activities. Digital Campus stores almost all of
the school’s information electronically, including information on students, staff, etc. Most
importantly, this information can be easily shared with authorized users, records can be easily
searched, and reports can be easily generated. Digital Campus ensures a disciplined scheduling
of classes, accurate processing of results, assuring parents of child’s progress, empowering
teachers with content tools and much more. Worksheets, circulars, newsletters are accessible to
students and parents very easily.

Parent Information
It is mentioned that parents are mostly well educated Indians from the elite strata of society and
they take keen interest in the educational progress of their wards and participate well in the
school activities with great enthusiasm.

Teachers’ Expertise and Qualifications
The school follows the SEC guidelines during the recruitment of staff. Teachers are well
qualified, trained and teach their major degree subject. Teachers in Primary and Secondary hold
appropriate teacher certificates issued by recognized universities in the home country. In order
to qualify for recruitment, teachers must also have their original qualification papers attested
from their home country and must provide the original documents together with the mark list.
Recruitment agencies in India refer the majority of the candidates. Interviews and selection are
carried out by senior staff at school. Vacancies are also advertised locally and on the website.
Retention is encouraged through providing a comprehensive and intensive induction programs
prior to the school opening and is reinforced during the year through inset training.

Professional Development
It is stated that Doha Modern Indian School always focuses on the academic achievements of its
students. Though all the teachers are highly qualified and experienced, they undergo regular
professional development courses in the form of workshops, seminars and training sessions

conducted by experienced and certified specialists. Specific training sessions are also arranged
on the basis of the needs of a teacher. At DMIS it is mandatory for all teachers to spend extra
hours in the afternoon on Sundays and Tuesdays every week. This extra time is utilized for
professional development strategies. Professional training weeks are held prior to and at the end
of each term. These sessions’ help teachers stay up to date with changing trends in the field of
education and motivate them to adopt methods and strategies that will enhance their teaching,
thereby benefitting the students.

Library aspects:
It is declared that the Library at Doha Modern Indian School is an all-encompassing and
proactive learning area. It promotes purposeful, constructive research on one hand and provides
a basis for creativity, expression and sensitivity on the other while developing essential
analytical and independent learning skills. Students have one Library class per week. It is
equipped with a collection of 11,900 books, 125 CDs/DVDs, 12 periodical subscriptions, which
includes magazines, and 9 newspapers. Resources are being continually added to existing
collection.

School/Community Partnerships
It is mentioned that the school makes undaunted efforts to meet the high expectations of the
parents and ensures quality education. The school ensures the earliest and quickest response in
addressing the parental concerns and queries with the help of an effective communication
system of the school portal. Regular parent teacher meetings, orientation and feedback help to
keep up a very good rapport with the parents. The school encourages involvement of parents
directly and indirectly in planning, suggesting, developing and boosting up the functioning of
all school activities. It is stated that parents are considered as partners, importance is given to
their involvement in the school's education process.
