Preface
Chemical products like basic, commodity, and specialty chemicals, as well as
pharmaceuticals,lifescience,andconsumerproducts,areallofessentialimpor-
tanceforeveryday’slifeinmodernsociety.However,asoneofthemostenergy-
demanding industrial sectors, the chemical processing industries are facing an
increasing need to improve energy efficiency and sustainability. The latter also
demandsatransitionofrawmaterialsfromthoselargelybasedonfossilresour-
ces to one that builds on recycling strategies in a circular economy and the use
of renewable resources. Yet, production processes still have to be reliable, effi-
cient,andeconomicallyviableinrapidlychangingmarketswithglobalcompeti-
tion. Generally speaking, the necessary development requires an increase in
efficiency of existing processes, based on an optimal selection of raw materials,
solvents, and energy improvements, as well as innovative technologies and to-
tallynewprocessingpathways.
One important toolset to successfully face these challenges in the chemical
processindustryisProcessIntensification.Thefirstbookofourtwo-bookseries

videsanintroductionandoverviewoverthevarioustechnologies,focusingonhybrid
andreactive separation processes. Thissecondbook of the seriesprovides an elabo-
rateintroductionandoverviewofcentrifugallyenhancedvapor/gas-liquidseparations,
focusingon rotating packed beds asinnovative technology for (reactive)separations
by means of a mass-transfer machine. While the general concept of centrifugally en-
