Agriculture is now becoming more complex and projecting
new challenges. Globalization has not only opened opportunities
for agribusiness but also has put a lot of pressure on the operation
of agribusiness. The vision for agribusiness sector in India is to
make India the food basket of the world. Agribusiness as a sector is
paving a way for increasing demand for professionally qualified

In this context the agro industry is regarded as an extended
arm of agriculture. The development of the agro industry can help
stabilize and make agriculture more lucrative and create
employment opportunities both at the production and marketing
stages. The broad-based development of the agro-products
industry will improve both the social and physical infrastructure of
India. Since it would cause diversification and commercialization
of agriculture, it will thus enhance the incomes of farmers and
create food surpluses.
I am extremely pleased to learn that ASPEE Agribusiness
Management Institute, NAU, Navsari is bringing a Special
Publication on Problems and prospects of Agro based Industries
in India. I am sure that this publication will be beneficial to all those
associated with agro based industries and will serve asa document

Publication based on Special Lecture Series organized on
"Problems and Prospects of Agrobased Industries in India" at
AAMI, NAU, Navsari during 23rd to 25th May, 2011 which is very
relevant for all those who are associated with agrobased industries
in India.
(A. N. Sabalpara) Agriculture is the backbone of Indian economy. The need of
Director of Research the hour is to go for commercialization of the food sector with rapid
changes in the organization and structure of food markets and
services includfng creation of modern retail sector, contract
farming, specialized procurement practices like E-Choupal, agro
processing certification and labeling.
The focus on value addition in the agri sector is vital for
comprehensive development of the rural economy. Since the Agro
processing industry creates jobs, demand for agri raw materials,
leads to diversification and commercialization of agriculture,
enhanCing the incomes of farmers and creating surpluses for
export . The broad-based development of the Agro processing
industry will improve both the social and physical infrastructure of
rurallndia.
I am sure the articles put forward by the eminent
academicians on above aspect will help the students,
academicians, agri Entrepreneurs and corporate managers to
enhance the market competitiveness and efficiency in agriculture.

Agro Industries are considered a growth engine for the
development of economy but in India they have not received as much
attention as agriculture. While agriculture contributes about 25 per cent
of India's GOP the value added by the processing industry is only 8 per
cent of total food production. For example, only two per cent of
horticulture products are estimated to be processed and more than 30
per cent of production is wasted due to lack of storage and processing
facilities.

independence days. Cotton mills, sugar mills, jute mills were promoted in
the corporate sector. During post-Independence days with a view to
providing more employment and using local resources, small scale and
village industries were encouraged. The agro-industry mainly comprises
of the post-harvest activities of processing and preserving agricultural
products for intermediate or final consumption. It is a well-recognized
fact across the world, particularly in the context of industrial development
that the importance of agro-industries is relative to agriculture which
increases as economies develop. It is in this sense that the agro-industry
is an important and vital part of the manufacturing sector in developing
countries and the means for building industrial capacities.
The global market is enormous for Agro based products. Only with
mass production aided by modern technology and intensive marketing
can the domestic market as well as the export market be exploited to the
fullest extenl. In order to capture the higher end of Ihe local market and
get a fair share of the export market, what is required is large scale
investmenl and adoplion of Ihe latesl technologies supported by
intensive marketing efforts which include branding, packaging and
promotion.
With modernization, innovation and incorporation of latest trends
and technology in the entire food chain as well as agro-production, the
total production capacity of agro products in India and the world is likely to
double by the next decade. The development of agro based industries
can help to realize the various linkages or inter-relationships between
industry and agriculture. If more incomes are to be generated in the rural
areas, it is imperative to accelerate the pace of growth of the agricultural
sector and the agro industry segment In view of the fact that the
development of agro industries can help stabilize and make agriculture
more lucrative and create employment both at the production and
marketing stages.
Many agro based industries are not able to progress due to a
variety of reasons such as lack of infrastructure. Inadequate availability
of raw materials. lack of financial assistance, changing customer trends,
business cycles, Poor technology and Policy constraints which affects
their competitiveness. Today the need of the hour is that the industry,
promotion boards and the Government with better co-ordination should
find out the difficulties experienced bytheAgro based industries. Some of
the critical areas that require immediate attention are strengthening of
the infrastructure like cold storage, improving the production process in
the agriculture sector, relaxing or removing stringent laws and
regulations, and ensuring reliable powersupply.
Recognizing the above facts, ASPEE Agribusiness Management
Institute organized a ·Special Lecture Series on Problems and Prospects
of Agro based Industries in India" and is coming out with a Special
Publication -' hope that this Special Publication will provide excellent
knowledge and ilelp for the academicians, corporate managers and
students to review the recent advances made in various emerging areas
of agro-based sector.
I eulogize sincere gratitude to Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, Dr. A.R.
Pathak, NAU, Navsari who readily agreed to the idea and provided
encouragement for organizing "Special Lecture Series" and publishing
the Special Publication on this occasion. I am very grateful to him for his
kindness, cooperation provided in this regard.
My special thanks to all the deans and directors for their support
