Acknowledgments
This collection of ten essays was selected from about 200 papers
delivered at the international conference entitled “Political
Civilization and Modernization in China: The Political Context of
China’s Transformation,” held in Beijing on June 11–12, 2004. The
conference was organized jointly by the Association of Chinese
Political Studies (USA), School of International Studies, Renmin
University of China (PRC), and the Carter Center (USA). The organ-
izers of the conference were Dr. Yang Zhong, Professor of Political
Science, the University of Tennessee, and former President of the
Association of Chinese Political Studies (USA); Dr. Xinning Song,
Associate Dean, School of International Studies, Renmin University
of China (PRC); and Dr. Yawei Liu, Associate Director, China
Elections Program, the Carter Center. Jilin University and Zhongshan
University also sponsored the conference.

Jean-Pierre CABESTAN is Senior Researcher at the French National
Centre for Scientific Research (Centre national de la recherche
scientifique), and a fellow at Institute of Comparative Law of the
University of Paris. He was Director of the French Centre for
Research on Contemporary China (Centre d’études français sur la
Chine contemporaine, CEFC) in Hong Kong from 1998 to 2003 and
Editor-in-Chief of Perspectives Chinoises and China Perspectives. His
most recent publications include Le système politique de la Chine
populaire (Paris, PUF, 1994); Taiwan–Chine populaire: l’impossible
reunification (Paris, Ifri-Dunod, 1995); Le système politique de
Taiwan (Paris, PUF, 1999); Chine–Taiwan: la guerre est-elle
concevable? La sécurité extérieure de Taiwan face à la menace de la
Chine populaire (Paris, Economica, 2003). He has also published
numerous articles and contributions in English on China’s political
system and reform, Chinese law, the relations across the Taiwan
Strait and Taiwanese politics.
Weixing CHEN is Professor of Political Science and directs the
International Studies Program at East Tennessee State University. He
specializes in comparative politics and international relations and
has published books and articles on China over the years.
Baogang GUO is Associate Professor of Political Science at Dalton
State College and Research Associate at China Research Center at
Kennesaw, Georgia. He received his PhD in Political Science from
Brandeis University. His research articles appeared in Asian Survey,
Modern China Studies, 21 Century China, Journal of Comparative
Asian Development, and Journal of Chinese Political Science.
